Some weird voices

I found it strange that a primarch and some space marines have goblinish voices. The story was OK; there are some twists towards the end. Not too much to do with the Horus Heresy though.

I liked it even less than Lovecraft Country; I find the the theme and the pulpish style is very similar.

I expected clear instructions for everyday life, but this book mostly gives generic, archaic ideas about life, that sounded very much like the classical taoist texts. I find these texts fascinating, but I dont't see the new perspective of this book.

The most useful book about Zen I've read

The most interesting parts were the dokusan and personal kensho descriptions. The details of sesshin gave me the a sense of monotonity, which might be a general phenomenon in Zen in order to "ripen" the mind. This phenomenon might be the reason why books on Zen keep repeating the same ideas; this book is no exception, but I don't see this as a problem any more (it bothered me when I read Beginner's Mind). I think this book encourages the reader to start practicing without thinking too much about the details and excuses.

I liked the first part of the book better than the second, because I thought that plotwise the story would explain itself. At the 5 hour mark (with a 6 hour book) I had the feeling that with a story still getting more complex and confusing, this is not going to be the case.
The descriptions of the enviroment were beautiful, and some of the 'insanity moments' were impressive too.
I would give 3 stars if this was a stand alone book, but I hope that the whole trilogy will explain the details.

I've listened to books 1-7 and 12; this one is quite unique; the plot is not as straightforward as the others, and the porotagonists are not Astartes (which is kind of good, Space Marines are hard to relate to in my opinion).
The 4 stars is in comparison to other Horus Heresy books.
Lorewise I would recommend this, the background information on the Heresy is pretty important.

Armstrong might be the best narrator I've heared so far.
This story might have been written for younger audiences; I struggled to find a single memorable moment in the book (and I still do). I hoped to learn the background of the Dark Angels, their reason for being so secretive, but the book simply doesn't give these background informations. The prologue claims that the book will elavorate on thw schism between Luther and the Lion, but I could summarise this conflict in two sentences; and this whole conflict seems childish, ridiculous and very minor compared to other conflicts in the series (Horus, Fulgrim, Magnus), where the conflicting emotions are fleshed out, and the principally good intentions can be understood even if they lead to betrayal. This book is mostly about a 15 year old running around with a sword. The different parts of the story feel very loosely connected, it doesn't feel like a coherent novel. The plot could have been summarized in a much shorter story; I don't really see why this has to be a book on its own (maybe it prepares the scene for the next Dark Angel book, but I still think, that this story could have been written in way fewer words).

Mediocre story, the narration is weird

The story was nothing special, there were some interesting bits of lore, but in my opinion, Graham McNeil does a much better work at describing the corruption a Chaos.
The narrator goes pretty much overboard with the acting; half the Death Guard (even in their uncorrupted state) sound like zombie orcs, there are some that speak like Gollum (Kaleb, most notably), and some are so posh (Voyen maybe), that such an acting could only fit an arrogant playboy like Fulgrim. Towards the end it got better, or maybe I just got used to is (hence the 3 stars for the narrator.)

I've listened to books 1-5 and 12, and this story is the best in my opinion. David Timson was the best narrator amongst these performers (though Martin Ellis is very colse, the pace of Timson is more followable).
