Written in 1831, Irving's dreamlike description of the Alhambra, the beautiful Moorish castle that defined the height of Moorish civilization, and the surrounding territory of Granada remains one of the best guidebooks to the region and one of the most entertaining travelogues ever written.

Historia
Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

not for me...
Revisado: 06-26-21
I am puzzled by this format. There were monents where the author made some poignant observations and I enjoyed those. However, the sound effects and constant interruption of recordings and interviews jept me confused and annoyed. It was much more difficult to get the context straight with so many interruptions. i wish Mr. Gladwell all the best with the Pushkin effort and congratulate them on reinventing radio from the 1930's. With a volor commentary track. I think I will stick to the medium proper where the books are read on their own. By far my least favorite Gladwell book.

Historia
His face is recognized the world over; his story is well known. But what is Prince William truly like? As Diana's eldest son, he was her confidant. While the tabloids eagerly lapped up the details of his parents' divorce, William lived though it, suffering the embarrassment and divided loyalties. He watched his father denounced on prime-time television; he met the lovers. And when he was just 15, his beautiful, loving mother was suddenly, shockingly snatched from his life forever. The nation lost its princess and its grief threatened the very future of the monarchy. What was almost forgotten in the clamor was that two small boys had lost their mother.

Panders a bit ...
Revisado: 09-06-20
I enjoyed the book overall, but it was clearly written to be a puff piece for William. Especially fun to hear what the author had to say about Harry and how he would contribute mightily to the firm and what a perfect complimentary personality he will be as the 2 brothers re-shspe the monarchy !! Awk...waaaaard.....
Also, a bit perjorative toward Diana, but not really anyone else ! a
At certain points they use an actor to voice a quote in situ. That was a poor choice. It messed up the flow and at times the vilumes were different!

Fantastic historical accounting.
Revisado: 02-24-20
This historical accounting of the Indinapolis was beautifully written and an emotional, moving read. Noone is vilified, but the truth is carefully laid out in many cases for the first time.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Strong pass
Revisado: 03-27-19
I thought the book was a bit self serving and seemed focused on the author and his/her role.in the bureaucratic process too much. I wanted an account of the history of the event and really am not interested in the name of anyone concerned other than where required to relate the story. This accounting was at times remarkably tedious in the volume of names littered about as if anyone is focused on such and that intense focus severely impacted the actual story.
I would concede that Mr. Higginbotham is very knowledgeable and played some sort of a key role but his insights are limited to items related to nuclear energy. He seems remarkably proud that American resources who were sent to help "discovered" that when in another culture it is effective and appreciated when local customs are respected. What a revelation!!
However, his talent at simply relating the workings of a nuclear reactor are amazing. I continued to listen only for that insight.

I don't recall the authors name, but that us kinda the point of this review. The story is about the accident(?) and what did/has happened. I found myself listening to this guys account of what he did and how amazing it was that the parties engaged from the US adapted to some japanese customs, etc ... It was as if the author duscovered the concept. I just found the story quite self-serving and intensely boring. Strong pass recommended.

this book is a train wreck
Revisado: 07-21-18
having worked in silicon valley for 20+ years, i expected to enjoy this book. i know or have known a few of the people interviewed for the book. in spite of that, i just did not appreciate the approach, the input or the conclusions. for me, it reflects very little of what i know to be silicon valley. further, this is not a book, exactly. it is basically a transcript of interviews with some talented people, some of whom did not/do not work in the valley. it is impossibly difficult to follow as the reader just yells out a name and then recounts their words.
in the preface, the author spoke of how he had literally cut up transcribed interviews and taped them into a layout. that is what it sounded like to me. no cohesive anything. just constant abrupt lines as if one is table reading a play but with only one actor.
i am embarrassed for the author and reader.

outdated and tends to be self-serving.
Revisado: 07-17-18
Fairly trpical review of a bureaucrats career as viewed thru rose-coloured glasses. strangely organized, at times chronological, at other times thematic, but it generally worked. i enjoyed the book but would recommend to others a more recent accounting. much has come to light since this was originally written!
