Historia
The story of Stax Records unfolds like a Greek tragedy. A white brother and sister build a record company that becomes a monument to racial harmony in 1960’s segregated south Memphis. Their success is startling, and Stax soon defines an international sound. Then, after losses both business and personal, the siblings part, and the brother allies with a visionary African-American partner. Under integrated leadership, Stax explodes as a national player until, Icarus-like, they fall from great heights to a tragic demise.

Soulsville Lives!
Revisado: 12-18-24
A magical tale beautifully told. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. I kept taking breaks and playing the singles being discussed. So much talent. Such a vision. Jim Stewart, Estelle Axton, and Al Bell brought a dream to life. In the heart of Jim Crow Memphis they built a sanctuary to art where hits were churned out in an environment where Black and White lived, performed, and created together. This book will “take you there.”

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Winslow can’t write a bad book. This is one of his best. A perfect ending to what he says will be his final trilogy. I hope he changes his mind. He clearly has a lot left to say.

Historia
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. Then a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student and the student is fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

Cosby’s Best So Far—and That’s Saying Something
Revisado: 09-23-23
He keeps getting better and better. Blacktop Wasteland was a banger. Razorblade Tears was even better. But this one…wow. It inhabits your being from jump. I resented every minute I was called away from it. Lazarre-White’s languid tone is perfect for the material. I’m thinking Michael B. Jordan as Titus.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Revisado: 05-02-23
Engrossing book beautifully read. You are living with the Churchills during Winston’s first year as Prime Minister. The war rages on the streets of London as thousands die in the Blitz. You see in granular detail how Churchill holds Britain together as other nations fall and all wait for the US to enter the war. Highly recommended.
