Historia
On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

I did t care for the narration, it has no verve. Just sounded like reading by someone. The story couldn’t hold me. DNF

Historia
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

Thoroughly enjoyed this
Revisado: 01-31-25
I know the reviews varied, but I enjoyed this book. It was atmospheric and complex. I think if you were ever felt love that was not enough, love that was wonderful, love that was toxic, love that hurt, you will enjoy the rhythm of the story.

Vietnam soldiers
Revisado: 12-08-24
I think this was pretty depressing reading. Perhaps that was her intention. Idk. The main character Frankie was a bit pathetic to be real. Yes, it all went that way in Vietnam, my mom had friends who returned and I remember them. They are haunted. One was full of machine gun wounds. One has cancer from AO presumably. I remember someone diving on the ground drunk as well at a lake party. PTSD is real. All of that she got right.
What I didn’t like was the main character. She was very self absorbed. She was also stupid. Her friends Barb and Ethel were much more realistic.
Idk…I love Kristin Hannah, but IMO maybe she could’ve left the love stories on the shelf when she tackled this particular decade and topic.

Fantastic performance!
Revisado: 11-18-24
This was so wonderfully narrated that the protagonist of the story was alive! He could’ve been an acquaintance of mine he was so real!! The introspection and reflection so well written! But…yeah I know, always a but…it’s a long, long, LONG meandering story. I guess as the characters come and roam about only to eventually fade in the story line, it’s just a reflection of the story itself.
Overall I very much enjoyed it!

Fierce and sad
Revisado: 07-21-24
I have always liked Dennis Lehane. First book I ever read was Shutter Island. Blew me away. That was years ago now. This book popped up in my browsing. I loved how it revealed poverty and racial tensions. I also related, having grown up in my own version of that neighborhood, I’ve lived through a lot of this. I just thought it was a bit stilted that one woman went against the Irish mob. They would’ve just shot her from the beginning and gotten rid of her. But…the. There wouldn’t be this book :(. Overall I loved it! Recommend!

Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty.

Not actually haunting
Revisado: 06-29-24
I enjoyed this book for the characters and performance. They came to life for me. They were just quirky enough. Kudos to the narration! I felt like I was at the theater!
Otherwise, not scary at all. More like a twilight Zone episode.
