Historia
Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Very enjoyable!
Revisado: 02-13-25
Witty, funny, emotional, relatable, yet with a few surprises. It had a few tropes, but no over-the-top obvious clichés. And Julia Whelan never disappoints.

Several of the sections are misnamed and the preview is from the wrong book... disappointing.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Unique story format...
Revisado: 07-31-21
Reality, really liked this story and the characters. It wasn't particularly predictable due to some unexpected turns and some jumps in time to keep it moving. I especially liked the analogy of our lives being a collection of short stories. (Not sure if Scott Brick was the best choice for narrator. He sometimes inserts unnecessary drama and has ruined a couple of books for me. I don't think he hurt this one, but I wonder if another narrator might have been a better fit to the overall sensibility of the story.)

Historia
Texas Ranger Rory Yates is not keen for hero status. But it's unavoidable once his girlfriend, country singer Willow Dawes, writes a song about his bravery. Rory escapes his newfound fame when he's sent to the remote West Texas town of Rio Lobo, a municipality with two stoplights. And now, according to the chief of police, it has one too many Texas Rangers. Rio Lobo Detective Ariana Delgado is the one who requested Rory and the only person who believes a local councilwoman's seemingly accidental death is a murder. Then, Rory begins to uncover a tangle of small-town secrets.

Words matter
Revisado: 02-27-21
Days after listening to this book, something is still bothering me - not the book so much, as I liked Rory and I think his character was pretty well drawn out, though many of the other characters were fairly one-dimensional. It seems there was a lot of almost-out-in-the-open crime going on and some over-the-top evil people hiding in plain sight, which made it a bit hard to believe that the female deputy and the newspaper editor didn't discover things earlier. Overall, however, it was a worthwhile story. The 3-star rating is based on the Audible description of "pretty good".
I listen to about 3 books every week and I enjoy lots of themes and genres with varying styles of grammar, language, and dialogue - from "everyday" to ethereal to street to comical. When listening, there's a combination of the author's story and the narrator's performance that affects the experience - and I suppose the work of editors and producers as well. They are all professionals who are paid for WORDS, so words should matter. I don't have the print version, so I don't know whether the issue was printed or only in the spoken version, but it's difficult to understand how the 'cavalry vs. Calvary' issue was missed by everyone involved. Rory twice (3 times?) mentioned calling in "the CALVARY". Seriously, a Texas Ranger should know that standby troops are called a CAVALRY. (Calvary is the site of the crucifixion.). It was irritating and distracting and decidedly unprofessional. Come on, if your livings depend on words, all of you (or at least someone on the team) should be paying attention to the words for which you're all getting paid. I'm embarrassed for you.
I'd like to listen to the other book, but I'd rather not if Rory will be calling for help from a hill in the Middle East. Does anyone know? ;-)

An outstanding read on several levels.
Revisado: 05-06-18
I've read and enjoyed all of Tyler Dilts' books, starting out because he writes about Long Beach where I live & he teaches at my alma mater. That's enough for 1, maybe 2 books, but to spend the time reading 5 books requires that the writing style, characters & storylines have to be special/unique. When this latest book came out, I attended a signing at Book Carnival where Mr. Dilts talked about his career & about the very personal inspiration for this book, as well as his plans for future books. He also talked about his decision to narrate his own books - not always a good idea - but with his acting background & personal connection to the story, rest assured that you will enjoy his narration of this very emotional & interesting tale.
