Historia
In the fall of 1988, Sue Miller found herself caring for her father as he slipped into the grasp of Alzheimer's disease. She was, she claims, perhaps the least constitutionally suited of all her siblings to be in the role in which she suddenly found herself, and in The Story of My Father she grapples with the haunting memories of those final months and the larger narrative of her father's life.

Historia
Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic and wise people they have always wanted to be. In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age.

Pipher : poetic yet profound
Revisado: 03-02-20
In her lyrical prose, Pipher captures the essence of the joys and challenges of the last stage of a woman's life. She shares the stories of many women who have faced a variety of diificulties with Grace Through these situations, they have found acceptance and an ability to wisely feel the joy in the paradox of suffering. Her book is full of small and significant epiphanies. It is a book that will acknowledge how hard life can be in our golden years. But she will, in the end, leave you with a resounding optimism.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Unmistakably poignant prose
Revisado: 10-27-19
There is real depth to the characters and story. Beautifully written. This book should win awards as no other author can really hold a candle to Patchett. Tom Hanks narrates with style but never overdoes it.

Historia
At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Revisado: 10-14-19
In most cases, I prefer to read a book first before watching it's adaptation to film. However, our library was reading this for a discussion group. I love to read but also love Audible in the car. What strikes me now is that this is a story of faith and the individuality of it's journey.

Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Thankful
Revisado: 07-23-18
I am truly grateful that this author was able to convey a real "kick in the seat of the pants" reality with a true Christian perspective minus all of the usual Christian platitudes. I no longer feel alone in my own trials and challenges nor in my own experience with overcoming those things. I especially appreciate the chapter about her brother as I have a similar story. I never really allowed myself to acknowledge how that trauma has been actually affecting my life. How I can have power to change and not deliberately make myself small... I will be thinking about her words for a long time, revisiting the chapters, and moving beyond armchair musing in the days ahead.
