Amazing world and story!
Revisado: 08-14-24
I loved this. I’m a big Sanderson fan and while I’m glad he’s been working on other projects, I NEED THE SEQUEL! Fair warning: this book ends with a cliffhanger. Not so bad that it’s not worth a read anyway, but he definitely didn’t intend for it to be a one-off. If that bothers you, hold off for the sequel, but otherwise there’s no reason not to read this awesome book!

Historia
It’s wintertime at Greenglass House. The creaky smuggler’s inn is always quiet during this season, and 12-year-old Milo, the innkeepers’ adopted son, plans to spend his holidays relaxing. But on the first icy night of vacation, out of nowhere, the guest bell rings. Then rings again. And again....

Amazing story with one oddity…
Revisado: 12-08-22
Story: This was a beautiful story! I loved every minute of Milo and Meddy’s adventure, with one exception… it felt like a “How to Play D&D” guidebook at times! It was so bizarre and really ripped me out of the flow of the story. It also truly had no impact on the story and could’ve easily been toned down. I’m an avid D&D player, but it was just weird…
Performance: Ben Levin was awesome! I will say though, all of his female voices sounded like 50 year old flapper women from the movies lol.
Overall: I’d definitely recommend it, but with the caveat that you have to ignore the out-of-place D&D references.

His voice is super nasal and annoying… very disappointing. It made it really hard to finish this novel, tbh.

Just… read it. I couldn’t put it down. I finished both books in like 3 days. It’s well worth the 19 hours. I wrote a super in-depth review for book one, but I guarantee after you read book one, you wont hesitate to pick up book two to see how Clara and team 7’s journey ends. You wont regret this series.

I straight up couldn’t stop.
Revisado: 07-28-22
This book was incredible. The plot was succinct, nuanced, and character-driven. The character development was deep for each character and really builds. There aren’t any plot points that seemingly come out of nowhere and you can really see why and how each character ends up where they do by the end of the novel. I loved how abuse was a major plot point and central to many of the characters, yet impacted them differently. The main character learned how to not let her abuse define her, one character refused to let his abuse define him, and another character was so completely driven by his abuse that he couldn’t even see that he WAS abused/an abuser. Additionally, the fight scenes were AWESOME. My husband heard me listening to some of them and he said it’s the first time he ever heard fight scenes that focused on how the characters felt, rather than just a series of subsequent actions. It really makes you feel the fear, the adrenaline, and the power in each Scrab fight. Just… read it. I couldn’t put it down. I finished both books in like 3 days. It’s well worth the 19 hours.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Revisado: 07-13-22
Everything about this book is perfection. The story is beautifully written, beautifully read, and just beautiful in every way. The relationship between Trevor and his mother, the incredibly vivid, yet easily digestible historic explanations of apartheid, the emphasis on language, culture, and politics. I cannot recommend this book enough. No one could possibly regret this read.

Historia
It's the perfect idea for a romantic week together: traveling across America by train. But then Hugo's girlfriend dumps him. Her parting gift: the tickets for their long-planned last-hurrah-before-uni trip. Only, it's been booked under her name. Nontransferable, no exceptions. Mae is still reeling from being rejected from USC's film school. When she stumbles across Hugo's ad for a replacement Margaret Campbell (her full name!), she's certain it's exactly the adventure she needs to shake off her disappointment and jump-start her next film.

Book is great, narration is iffy…
Revisado: 04-04-22
Okay so this book is adorable. But the guy who does Hugo’s voice can’t read Mae’s lines. It sounds so weird. I wish they had the girl reading for Mae and the boy for Hugo… the Hugo chapters were rough once Mae joined the picture, which is sad because I love the narrator’s Hugo voice! Just not for Mae…

If you like Harry Potter and History, must read!
Revisado: 08-30-21
Every year, around the beginning of Fall, I google "books to read if you love Harry Potter." Every year, I am horribly disappointed. But not this year!
This concept was a daunting challenge, to say the least. This author is an incredible writer... to somehow recount the events surrounding the French Revolution with immense historical precision and still tell a new story with well-developed and sympathetic characters is quite the feat. It was masterfully accomplished.
I am a high school French teacher, so I knew which characters wouldn't make it, but I still felt their loss and mourned their downfall.
As for the performance... it was better than average. The Narrator sometimes slipped back into a British accent and I did have a hard time telling who was speaking during some of the more intense, back and forth conversations. But all around, he was solid.
If you like history and fantasy, this is a must-read.
