Historia
Berlin Game begins with a plea from “Brahms Four,” one of Britain’s most valuable agents stationed in East Germany: He wants to cross the Iron Curtain and come to the West. Bernard Samson, the former field agent now stationed in London, is tasked with the rescue. But before he even sets out on the mission, suspicions arise that there is a traitor in the MI6, likely one of his closest colleagues.

Classic cold-war espionage
Revisado: 11-02-24
A classic book superbly narrated. Deighton’s cold-war spy stories are classics and it was a pleasure to listen to Audible’s adaptation.

Historia
A true story as exhilarating as a great spy thriller, as turbulent as today's headlines from the Middle East, A Time to Betray reveals what no other previous CIA operative's memoir possibly could: the inner workings of the notorious Revolutionary Guards of Iran, as witnessed by an Iranian man inside their ranks who spied for the American government.

Fascinating story, distracting narration
Revisado: 09-04-24
A rare insight from a spy motivated to betray his extremist and brutal government to try to save his country. It’s a tense and gripping story that for me, was marred by a distracting narrator, whose accent did not sound Persian.

Bosch in Hong Kong
Revisado: 08-29-24
Narration was decent. I’m a Bosch series fan so I’m predisposed to like any of the books unless there’s something glaringly wrong. This is a fairly typical Bosch book and I enjoyed it. It’s not the best but it’s also not the worst.

Compelling listen
Revisado: 08-25-24
Terrific narration by the author and participant in the affair. Nobody tells a story like someone actually embroiled in it and listening to Mike Hoare discuss the planning, execution, failure and aftermath was fascinating, he is a master storyteller. Even though I found parts of the story somewhat unbelievable (blithely overlooking multiple indicators that the plan was compromised and lacked proper backing) I found his version of events compelling.

Formulaic YA dystopian fiction

The narration is very good. Not sure why this came up as a recommendation from Audible for me. The story is fairly standard “youth against the oppressive empire”.

Historia
The 2020 Commission Report on the North Korean Nuclear Attacks Against the United States is an exciting piece of "speculative fiction." The novel posits that there was a nuclear attack against the US on March 21, 2020 by North Korea, and that a national bipartisan commission was created to investigate what and how it happened. It's pretty scary stuff.

Strong start but a mediocre finish
Revisado: 08-09-24
The author presents a pretty interesting scenario and paints the technology and geopolitics painstakingly and believably. Unfortunately, after the DPRK launches nukes, the author seems to be in a hurry to wrap things up with the notable exception of describing the conditions of those surviving the strikes; those passages could have been lifted directly from Hersey’s book, “Hiroshima”. On the whole, a pretty decent techno thriller.

The following winter, her dismembered remains were found buried in a seaside cave. The seven months in between had seen a massive search for the missing girl involving Japanese policemen, British private detectives, and Lucie’s desperate but bitterly divided parents. Had Lucie been abducted by a religious cult or snatched by human traffickers? Who was the mysterious man she had gone to meet? And what did her work as a hostess in the notorious Roppongi district of Tokyo really involve?

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Well crafted story
Revisado: 07-20-24
Excellent narration, nobody really tells a story as well as the person who experienced it and Vance warmly talks about his upbringing, challenges, experiences and those who helped him achieve success. The stories are extremely well written and he successfully draws you into the narrative with vivid imagery and unforgettable family characters that were very relatable to me. While he addresses some of the social problems faced by poor and working class Americans, he doesn’t pontificate. I very much enjoyed the read, and though I definitely don’t agree with his current politics, this is a story worth reading and I believe offers insight on how he has navigated life to get where he is today.

Historia
When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Putin’s Kleptocracy
Revisado: 07-10-24
Browder’s second book on Putin’s kleptocracy, money laundering and political influence in the West. The audiobook is well narrated and the author’s descriptions of what he, his lawyers and investigators uncovered corroborates what Fiona Hill and others have written about Putin for years. It presents a picture of Putin’s methods to obfuscate his crimes, corrupt Western media and officials, and to silence his most effective critics. This is a must read for anyone following Putin and Russian current affairs.

Okay fantasy/horror
Revisado: 06-29-24
The beginning and middle are stronger than the finish. It begins as an interesting take on multiple Celtic myths manifesting in America but towards the end strays into hyperbolic consequences that the protagonists must set right. At that point. I couldn’t suspend disbelief any longer. Written in the 80’s, it shows its age. The narrator is adequate to the task.
