Required reading (for those that rest easy each night without thinking about the why or the how of it)
Revisado: 10-13-24
Perhaps one of the most startling and disturbing books I’ve had the fortune to come across. It lays bare the sacrifice our military makes for the rest of us. Upsetting in a very real way, for me it brought back regrets that can’t be undone. This book accentuates how much we are insulated from the brutality of war here at home and from the very real gift our Servicemen give us each and every day. This type of truth telling has to be crafted into a powerful narrative by the right storytellers. Jack Carr, James Scott and Ray Porter made this real and recent. The story is almost too emotional, devastatingly so. Absorbed in a very short period or time, I still had to periodically stop as if to take a pull of water while racing across the desert, only to pick up again as I knew I had to finish. I’d tell you to read this because for some it will be a must. I hope you, those out there that can feel history in your bones, find you need this book like I did.

Only Billy Gerrick knows the truth…he’s a ticking time bomb. An overachieving bundle of fear, denial, and desire who has held it together for three-plus decades by sheer will. Now, on the eve of finalizing the most comprehensive, far-reaching global agreement ever proposed, Billy Gerrick is forced to confront a past he’d rather forget—the painful childhood, the embarrassing failures, the impressive string of romantic flameouts—when his perfect fiancée chooses this historic moment to pressure him about settling down, getting married, and having kids.

Good, bad, indifferent
Revisado: 12-12-23
I tried to like this book. I tried to return this book after starting it over time and again. I was unsuccessful in both. I realize now, after finally finishing it after listening to it 3 or 4 times in parts and piece, is that at times it was soft core porn, romance, arrogance and ego blended into a soup of coming-of-age who am I treacle. There were pieces I laughed at out loud but pieces that seemed unnecessary. I like Savio’s other work and I’m annoyed with myself that I just couldn’t, no matter how I tried, enjoy this as anything more than a pulpy read. If you want to fill time, it passes but to me his other works are far better.

Historia
With their jobs in the spy world on suspension, all Nate and Jar wanted was a little vacation time out of the city. But not even two days on the road, their plans are hijacked by a teen’s cry. What starts out as helping the kid out of a tricky situation leads Nate and Jar into a dark world of fire and hate, of greed and corruption. As much as they might want to continue on their way, neither would ever do so. Because helping those who aren’t in a position to help themselves is Nate and Jar’s specialty.

A real California story
Revisado: 11-12-23
See Sherri’s review below. It’s disconcerting that so many mask references that really had nothing to do with the story were so prominent. Too bad because it took away from it and this ultimately has changed my thoughts on BB. I really didn’t buy this with the hope there was any political subtext.

Fantastic read/listen
Revisado: 10-13-23
First, I have to say that when my brain carries on its inner monologue, I hope it sounds like Edoardo. His voice is hypnotic and fits this trilogy to perfection.
I do wish the first and second books were provided in the opposite order but in the listening, back-to-back-to-back, the disparate pieces were more accessible. The story does bend and flex in ways I did not expect, and I did love some of the characters although at times, because of the sheer numbers, the development was thin or maybe fragmented.
Overall though, a brilliant atypical delivery really illustrating just how solipsistic the human race really is, and how few real change makers there just might be.
Very enjoyable.

Historia
When retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott learns he’s inherited a 250-acre farm in Tarrin, Missouri (pop. 2,100), he can’t get there fast enough. As he slowly acclimates to small-town living, he hears rumblings about a horrific crime in the town’s past. Four years earlier, a recently fired employee of the local grocery store enacted his revenge, shooting and killing the owner of the store, plus four customers, then turning the gun on himself. The crime appears to have been solved, but Prescott has his doubts.

The modern day book version of the outlaw Josie Wales.
Revisado: 12-10-21
OK, maybe that’s a stretch but the way Nick writes, without taking himself too seriously and leaving his characters open to pretty wide flaws, makes this a brilliant read. If you are looking for a book series to all misprint through, laugh a ton, scratch your noggin and then second-guess yourself, this might just be that one. Fantastic narration adds to the warmth of the character built within the book. This is a strong recommend for this novel. I’m on to the next and then the next of the series and hope that they all carry on in the same way.
