Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

More than a book
Revisado: 10-25-24
Coates is clearly an amazing writer, but this book is more than just his writing. The world, especially the western world, needs to understand what is happening now. This book delivers an appropriate message efficiently, and through a viewpoint that is severely needed.

Historia
Steve Martin met his good friend Adam Gopnik three decades ago, and in that time, Gopnik has always marveled at Martin’s ability to flourish in a wide variety of artforms: magic, comedy, art collecting, writing, and music. In So Many Steves: Afternoons with Steve Martin, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik creates a new type of profile: a year’s worth of conversations with Martin where Gopnik pulls back the curtain on his friend’s illustrious career.

It’s a really good podcast interview that’s been marketed and sold as a book. Stick with Born Standing Up

Historia
Amber A’Lee Frost came to New York City as a working class activist in a punk band, arriving just before the start of Occupy Wall Street—the first major event in decades for a socialist movement that was nearly extinct at the turn of the century. She's been at the vanguard of radical politics ever since. Dirtbag is a much-anticipated debut from one of the greatest emerging writers in modern socialism. This memoir is more than Frost’s story; it is also the story of the only movement that has a chance to reshape our world.

It’s really hard for American millennial socialists to find any sort of ideological foothold in the current political system. I felt at least some comfort from this book that there’s at least one person who feels like I do and is much better at expressing it in a way that isn’t purely nihilistic.

Historia
Bob Odenkirk’s career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explicate it for you. Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! But there is just one and one is plenty. Featuring humorous tangents, wild characters, and Bob’s trademark unflinching drive, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama is a classic tale told by a determined idiot.

Like a supercharged version of Born Standing Up. Comedic gold scattered through a narrative of someone who has seen it all

Historia
The amazing thing about the human memory is that, just when one thinks one has recalled everything worth recalling, the memory regenerates itself and serves up a whole new eminently worthy batch. At least that s how it works when you re dealing with the legendary mind of Carl Reiner. In his 2013 memoir, I Remember Me, Carl treated us to ninety years of professional and personal anecdotes, ranging from witty, weird and heartwarming to insightful, informative, and always funny usually a combination of at least two, sometimes three or four, of the aforementioned.

This man is a legend, but this book is just a collection of anecdotes presented out of chronological order that cover the less fascinating parts of his life. You’ll learn more about him reading Mel Brooks’ bio.

Historia
This is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past.
