As much as I wanted to like this, Page's narration is depressingly flat. He has very little vocal variance or nuanced intonations, and the first 10% or so (which was all I could manage) is a memoir of constant self-confusion and suffering. I do know that these are especially important aspects for a trans person to share and have validated, but I felt myself really being dragged into depression and had to stop listening. Might not be a bad book, but it wasn't doing good things for me.

The Rags-to-Riches Story the World Needs

Billy Porter moves from growing up poor with a partially disabled mother and a sexually abusive stepfather to pursuing and eventually achieving his dream of inclusion and recognition for his beautifully unique art, style, and skills on stage and camera. He moves back and forth through time, showing us the traumas that shaped him and the way they continue to affect him. This memoir is not a story where every problem is solved, but it certainly does have a happy ending and a much needed message of acceptance--especially self-acceptance. Get ready for some raw emotion and a queer black man who is rightfully PROUD of his art and existence in the world.

There's information here, but there's more story than info. The facts provided are barely worthy of being called a book. You could get the same info on Wikipedia. Pollan reads the book well, but it's pretty well discouraged me from trying other books from him. Glad this came free with my membership. Not worth paying for.

The best prose I've ever read, incredible reader and actor in Jeremy Irons, and a story told by a deeply human and deeply flawed, unreliable narrator that will have you writhing across the spectrum of human emotions. Don't expect to like the narrator, but do expect to be entranced and fascinated and horrified all at once.

As glad as I am that Losada works through her own issues of shame around taking charge of her own pleasure and sexuality, this book doesn't offer any revelations. If you're just beginning to explore your interest in these topics, Losada might be a good place to start, but if you're familiar with the discourse on sex positivity, then this book won't hold any surprises.

I gave this book 4 stars for Aubrey's unique character and writing style. He is a great example of someone trying their best (both as a writer of this book and in life) and a refreshing, positive, often hilarious reminder that we don't have to get everything right all of the time. I found about 30% of the info in this book to be new to me, as someone who keeps up with wellness, fitness, and well-being sources. That said, I'd still recommend the book as a reinforcement tool. And because sometimes we need to be presented with a fresh mindset on what we think we know. Keep writing, Aubrey! Oh, and def check out the Aubrey Marcus podcast if you want a sense of his ethos and sense of humor. Good stuff!

I've just finished listening to this book for the second time, and I know there will be a third! Max makes all this info super accessible without dumbing it down. He also doesn't villify carbs as you might expect. Very well researched and well presented. This book has already had a serious impact on my nutrition habits, and it's great to be free from the dreaded sugar crash!

Lots of great info here on the social and psychological causes of depression and anxiety. The meta-analysis of antidepressant studies was really valuable and persuasive, but the most important lesson here is that "Depression is a normal response to an abnormal life event."
Johann Hari makes his points through narrative, which typically bugs me, but I found the affect really helpful for actually absorbing the info here. My only complaint is that Hari's narration is really on point for a book on depression, so I had to take the book in small doses.
