When I read a fiction book or see a film I love, I am delighted to find the non-fiction story behind it. Bill Lishman was an astonishingly creative sculptor, inventor, naturalist, and Canadian 20th century renaissance man who continually built the things that came out of his imagination.
He loved to fly, was one of the first to make small ultra-light planes in Canada—and dreamed of using his ultra light craft to help teach flights of endangered birds to migrate by imprinting newly hatched geese to himself and his planes—and flying them south. In working with scientists and friends toward that end, he recorded film and made documentaries that finally led to the production of the wonderful fictional movie “Fly Away Home,” for which he and his team were plane builders, goose wranglers, and stunt doubles.
This book is, I guess, a memoir about his life, and that life project in particular. It is sometimes rambling, with many details, and the one who reads it out loud is not a professional. But I’m sure glad to have it in audiobook form!

After reading Kristin Hannah’s book, “The Women,” about female Vietnam war vets, I really wanted to read Diane Carlson Evan’s own story—which Hannah credits in her book.
So glad I read it! Carlson Evans is the mover and shaker who dreamed up and led the movement to build the Women’s Vietnam War Memorial statue in DC—after experiencing her own PTSD.

I love the book. A rip-roaring tale that asks the reader to engage, read between the lines, and grow into enduring truths. And—just fun!

Ryland Grace wakes up from an induced coma to find himself on a spaceship, without memory of how he got there. As the story unfolds, we figure that out, and why . It’s a pretty good story, beautifully narrated. I enjoyed it.
It was NOT as crazy-wonderfully engaging as The Martian. I’m not sure why. Perhaps because the interchanges between characters were fun—but somehow did not ring genuine for me. Maybe that’s it.
Again, I enjoyed the book. It’s not on my list of books to re-read.

Have you ever read these wonderful books aloud? At least at first, the flow of the language is a little difficult to get right. Not so with these top actors. I’ve never appreciated their skills so much, hearing what they do with what I found to be challenging. All I can say is, “Wow!” Thanks.

In this age of finger-wagging, accusations, and political acrimony, it's really good to read a bit of how this bright and well-spoken woman thrived in the Trump White House.

Beautiful performance of a favorite tale I’ve returned to again and again. This is my second listen of Inglis’ Hobbit, and the Trilogy. My 4th or fifth of the Tolkien books themselves.
Rob Inglis sings the songs and reads the parts with such nuance, his voice at turn richly noble, prosaic, or harsh. A real joy.
