Tasteful Treatment of Difficult History
Revisado: 09-15-18
This book was beautifully written and performed. It was heartbreaking yet healing! I never knew the tragic story of the Tennessee Children's Home Society, and this brought it too life. It's good for all of us to know what can happen if we look the other way rather than being aware of what's happening around us. I also loved the story of Avery, the modern center of the book. I felt such a part of this book I missed the characters when the book was over!

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Excellent True Story
Revisado: 08-01-18
I was reluctant to read this book as it didn't seem a genre in which I'd be that interested, but I was wrong. The story of Joe Rance drew me instantly in, and the history interwoven with his story was interesting and informative. I was actually sad to have the book end because I felt part of Joe's team the longer I listened to the book.

Historia
From her first moment at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino knows she's an outcast. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, a major infraction in high-school society, so her old friends won't talk to her, and people she doesn't know glare at her. She retreats into her head, where the lies and hypocrisies of high school stand in stark relief to her own silence, making her all the more mute.

Difficult Topic-Good Story
Revisado: 07-04-18
This book made me think deeply about difficult situations teenagers face. It dealt with serious subjects. Some of the language is adult, yet it may open some dialogue between parents and teenagers about difficulties some face.

Oscar the cat has a very special skill. An otherwise ordinary cat—he'd sooner give you his back or a sideways glance than curl up on your lap—Oscar has the uncanny ability to predict when people are about to die. Adopted by staff members at Steere House nursing home when he was a kitten, the three year-old cat has presided over the deaths of more than twenty-five nursing home residents thus far.

Anyone who has a loved one with dementia should read this book. My father has suffered with dementia for several years, and this book gave me great insight into what we have gone through. It is comforting to hear how other people have dealt with dementia and how to better deal with it myself.

Historia
. With the rise of the Berlin Wall, 12-year-old Gerta finds her family divided overnight. She, her mother, and her brother, Fritz, live on the eastern side, controlled by the Soviets. Her father and middle brother, who had gone west in search of work, cannot return home. Gerta knows it is dangerous to watch the wall, to think forbidden thoughts of freedom, yet she can't help herself. She sees the East German soldiers with their guns trained on their own citizens; she, her family, her neighbors, and her friends are prisoners in their own city.

Excellent Reminder of the Importance of Freedom
Revisado: 02-26-18
Jennifer A. Nielsen is an excellent writer who brings her characters to life! She gives such detail to make the reader feel invested in the story. I became so anxious about the main character's plight that one night I could barely fall asleep after listening to the story. This story gave me a whole new understanding of what happened to East Germany after the wall went up.

Great Plot but not Appropriate for Everyone

I loved the mystery and themes of this book, but I wish some of the language and unnecessary intimate details could have been left out as they detracted from the real story line.

Historia
Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is the now-classic novel of two women in the 1980s; of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women - of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Rut - -who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

I loved the movie made from this book, so I was disappointed when the book had several parts not in the movie that I felt degraded the story line. Nevertheless, the performance of the reader was excellent.
