Historia
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Brilliant and blindingly beautiful
Revisado: 03-29-25
The writing is so vivid and intense! It rips open insights I never imagined. The reading was wonderful. It leads the story on and never gets in the way. I interpret the ending in a poetic and ultimately positive way, and it leaves me with joy. Too many people have tried to turn this poetic ending with its awesome imagery into something literal.

Are all Ann Patchett’s books this good?
Revisado: 09-10-24
This book was so well crafted and deeply psychological. It was insightful and meaningful. A group of people are taken hostage at a fancy party by a revolutionary group. The hostage situation drags on for 4 months. During that time, people bond. They create more meaningful lives. And loves. Then it all ends. And there is no returning to normal. Thought provoking, about what makes life meaningful and worthwhile.

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Author kept killing characters
Revisado: 11-04-23
I guess the author wanted to convey the suffering of these lovely Korean people in an unwelcoming Japan. But the way she kept killing off characters felt contrived. Don’t break my heart without good reason.

Historia
This breathtaking saga, set in the 1990s, tells the story of the landlords and tenants of a derelict canning factory in Southern Portugal. The wealthy, always-scheming Leandros have owned the building since before the Carnation Revolution, a peaceful coup that toppled a four-decade-long dictatorship and led to Portugal's withdrawal from its African colonies. It was Leandro matriarch Dona Regina who handed the keys to the Matas, the bustling family from Cape Verde who saw past the dusty machinery and converted the space into a warm - and welcoming - home.

Unique, spellbinding story
Revisado: 06-24-23
This book about two intertwined families of different classes and races in Portugal is amazing in its delicacy and poetry. It is also remarkable in its delicate treatment of a cognitively impaired yet lovely woman, developmentally delayed since birth. The story is told largely from her viewpoint, which is poignant in it vulnerability and intuition. This book should be on Oprah’s list!

Historia
The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.

Why did I avoid this fabulous book so long?
Revisado: 02-20-23
I acquired the idea during teenage that Wuthering Heights was a ridiculous Gothic romance, with Catherine crying, Oh Heathcliff! So now, 50 years later and running out of classics I haven’t read, I gave in. This is an outstanding and completely unique book. The author creates very complete characters and turns them loose. It is a true study of human character, with all its passions, illusions, strengths and foibles. No character is over simplified. Even the fiend can be sympathetic, and the most innocent shows her foolishness and weakness. This book is so strong and bracing. And deep. I’ll be pondering it for a long time. It illuminates aspects of human character that are seldom examined or understood.

So disappointing!
Revisado: 02-14-23
Really, this is the best this lush author can give us as an example of awakening? A vapid rich young woman searching for the thrill of romance while being unable to give and feel real love for her children and the people in her life? And then a vague ending (SPOILER ALERT) suggesting suicide. Or else an ennui born of too little purpose in life. There is so much that can said about the stifling role of wealthy women in the south in the late 1800s. This was a real let down. But beautifully written and read.
