Historia
Miss Marple encounters a compelling murder mystery in the sleepy little village of St. Mary Mead, where under the seemingly peaceful exterior of an English country village lurks intrigue, guilt, deception and death. Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing land-owner is the most detested man in the village. Everyone—even in the vicar—wishes he were dead. And very soon he is—shot in the head in the vicar's own study. Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues that will lead to the unmasking of the killer.

Solid start to Marple
Revisado: 05-03-25
Not the best Marple book but it's only the first full length novel in the series, and not a bad start

Historia
Two standalone novels from the queen of mystery, Agatha Christie. From the sprawling Leonide family to dark moors, no one can spin a mystery quite like she can. In Crooked House, the Leonides are one big happy family living in a sprawling, ramshackle mansion. That is until the head of the household, Aristide, is murdered with a fatal barbiturate injection....

Crooked House > Endless Night
Revisado: 04-26-25
Endless Night creeps me the eff out. Definitely one of Christie's most genuinely disturbing books, so if you like that kind of thing, go for it! Crooked House is a standalone, with no familiar Christie characters, and it's a classic "extended family living with rich patriarch" set up, but I think it's actually Christie's best use of that trope in her whole catalogue. The twist of Crooked House is also one of my favorites of all time.

Historia
The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything...until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

What a classic!
Revisado: 04-26-25
While it's often dismissed as a wannabe "Murder on the Orient Express," there are things about this book that I like even better than "Orient Express." We get a lot more time to get to know the characters and care about each of their unique situations and troubles. This can make it feel slow getting started, but I actually really enjoyed the more leisurely pace.

Historia
Lymstock is a town with more than its share of shameful secrets - a town where even a sudden outbreak of anonymous hate mail causes only a minor stir. But all that changes when one of the recipients, Mrs. Symmington, commits suicide. Her final note says "I can’t go on", but Miss Marple questions the coroner's verdict of suicide. Soon nobody is sure of anyone - as secrets stop being shameful and start becoming deadly.

Marple-lite, but fun!
Revisado: 04-26-25
There is extremely little Marple in this book, but I really really like our viewpoint character, and most of the other characters as well.

After the Funeral > Murder on the Links
Revisado: 04-26-25
Murder on the Links is the bad stumble that Christie took between her solid first book and her MASTERFUL third book; it's an absolute mess of lucky coincidences. After the Funeral, however, is a ton of fun, a really good example of the classic Christie "extended family all wants the patriarch's money" set-up. Nothing especially outstanding, but very enjoyable.

Historia
Towards Zero: What is the connection among a failed suicide attempt, a wrongful accusation of theft against a schoolgirl, and the romantic life of a famous tennis player? To the casual observer, apparently nothing. But when a house party gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of an elderly widow, earlier events come to a dramatic head. Ordeal By Innocence: According to the courts, Jacko Argyle bludgeoned his mother to death with a poker. The sentence was life imprisonment.

Towards Zero > Ordeal by Innocence
Revisado: 04-26-25
I really adore Towards Zero in terms of the characters and structure, and especially for Superintendent Battle being at his Battle-est. Ordeal by Innocence is okay, if you can get past the really messed up ideas about adoption that they had at the time and the (even for Christie) rather alarming age gap in one of the final happy couples.

Historia
Six people sit down to a sumptuous meal at a table laid for seven. In front of the empty place is a sprig of rosemary - "rosemary for remembrance." A strange sentiment considering no one is likely to forget the night, exactly a year ago, that Rosemary Barton died at exactly the same table, her beautiful face unrecognizable, convulsed with pain and horror. But then Rosemary had always been memorable - she had the ability to arouse strong passions in most people she met. In one case, strong enough to kill....

Christie subverts herself!
Revisado: 04-26-25
The structure of the first half of the book is really great, giving a retrospective from all five of the main suspects, but my very favorite part is that Christie breaks one of her own unspoken rules to give a really great twist!

Historia
Mr. Shaitana is famous as a flamboyant party host. Nevertheless, he is a man of whom everybody is a little afraid. So when he boasts to Hercule Poirot that he considers murder an art form, the detective has some reservations about accepting a party invitation to view Shaitana's "private collection". Indeed, what begins as an absorbing evening of bridge is to turn into a more dangerous game altogether.

Must love bridge?
Revisado: 04-26-25
I didn't like this one the first time I read it, but it's grown on me. If you know nothing at all about the card game bridge then you're gonna be completely lost at several points, but if you can survive that, then the characters are a lot of fun, and this is the first time we get to meet three recurring Christie characters: Ariadne Oliver, Superintendent Battle, and Colonel Race, all of whom I adore.

Historia
On holiday on the Cornish Riviera, Hercule Poirot is alarmed to hear pretty Nick Buckley describe her recent "accidental brushes with death". First, on a treacherous Cornish hillside, the brakes on her car failed. Then, on a coastal path, a falling boulder missed her by inches. Later, an oil painting fell and almost crushed her in bed. So when Poirot finds a bullet hole in Nick's sun hat, he decides that this girl needs his help. Can he find the would-be killer before he hits his target?

A big departure for Christie
Revisado: 04-26-25
This is almost more of an adventure novel than a mystery, at least in tone. I really love it, but it's very un-Christie like in a lot of ways, the stakes and the scope and the swashbuckling hero.
