Even though I knew whodunit early on, I found the story and characters quite interesting and the narration pitch perfect. My only complaint is about the slow unwinding towards the end. The tendency of the modern novelist to dot every i and cross every t slows the story’s momentum until it’s almost a relief to reach the end. Still, this is a book well worth the effort.

This book is a mess. So much time is wasted on introducing a bloated cast and their issues that all the real action takes place towards the end, and even that is ruined by the author’s need to relate the case from seemingly everybody’s point of view. Tedious doesn’t begin to describe the last hour. I’m rating it average just because the author has a chance to improve with discipline and a decent editor.

This has all the hallmarks of a Terry Pratchett novel, magic and hilarity being at the forefront. I really don’t know why it’s characterized as YA fiction. People of all ages who appreciate Mr. Pratchett’s other work will love Tiffany, too.

I liked the concept, just not the execution. It feels as if an editor kept saying, “Flesh it out, flesh it out” until it stretched too thin. As a result, little things kept annoying me: the repetitive use of words like “palimpsest”, the insistence that Addie knew how to speak Swiss, a nationality, not a language (little Switzerland has four official languages, one of them Swiss German, which is never referred to simply as Swiss). In the end, I really didn’t care what happened to Addie or Luc.

A man in his late 70’s who doesn’t seem to be in great shape for his age has a gargantuan dog that creates havoc wherever they go. The man almost dies several times but somehow keeps on ticking, even when the rambunctious dog is the cause of half his aches and pains. Oh, and the dog talks (not to people but seemingly to all other species). Sloppy writing and poor narration make this a waste of time unless your ability to suspend disbelief is monumental. It’s a shame that this author couldn’t take some of his basically good plots and make them less idiotic.

Vera is the only point of interest amid her sea of angst-ridden young adults who just love to say everything is AMAZING. The story lags and the writing clunky and predictable.

I loathe male narrators who portray women’s voices as quick and choppy. His male characterizations weren’t that much better, making the book more irritating than it should have been.

Frothy and fun, but the constant focus on the heroine’s hormones gets pretty thin in this book. I think this #2 will be my last.

The pleasant surprise in this book was that I hadn’t figured out the whole thing before the big reveal. Quite good, although for me, the narrator could have been better (I know, he’s the big favorite of many, just not mine).

In spite of the egregious and repeated use of “I” as the object of a preposition (although used to excess today but most certainly not before 1960), this was well written and beautifully performed. The story is an imaginative re-thinking of Holmes and Moriarty. Even though I figured out pieces of the mystery early on, I still enjoyed listening to the fall into place.
