Loved this book

I loved the characters , narrator and especially the tours. I liked how the author took us on tours of the areas and wove in facts with supposition about mysteries.

When she makes those flippant remarks to her son over coffee one Friday, she has no inkling that within a few hours she will be facing the most terrifying situation of her life.

Hard to see this a Grainger book
Revisado: 01-27-23
First, the story was not the best, the car chase lasted so long that I skipped ahead and I didn't like the narrator. I think the intent was to show Lane as a tough, no nonsense person and the written dialogue would have done that....I disliked the way the narrator read the dialogue. Maybe I got spoiled by the other Grainger series and this one is a dud or maybe future books in this series will be better. I think getting a new narrator might be a good step toward that.

I had trouble with the narrator at first, but once I let go and went with the flow at his pace, everything clicked.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Liked it but struggled at times
Revisado: 01-05-23
Really like the narration and thought The characters were really well developed. The intensely descriptive mutilation and other description of really bizarre things turned my stomach so I skipped over those periods. Overall worth it me for otherwise interesting story with great lead characters and the amazing Robert Glenister narrating. See him in British series Hustle with Adrian Lester ....its a good show and he is great.

Narrator Not the Best
Revisado: 12-30-22
I really like most of the main characters and the story line is good but frequently when speaking for the women her voice is too high pitched and annoying. When speaking for males or when narrating what male or female characters are thinking, the narration is good. Overall I like the books but it was hard to get pass this narration issue.

Narration made me do it
Revisado: 05-25-22
The story might have turned out to be interesting but I just couldn't get past the narrators whispery, sing song style of speaking. I admit I heard her style of speaking/narrating in the sample but thought the story would be so good, I would be able to tolerate it.
Interestingly, when speaking as the cantankerous older Marva, the narrator was fairly easy to listen to, but speaking as the character Lucy Bloom it was impossible for me bear. Also interchanges between Lucy and anyone other than Marva set my teeth on edge. It seemed the narrator was trying show the intended humor in the story through her sing song, matter-of-fact intonation rather than just letting the words/story show the humor.
I might get a Kindle or paper copy of this book to read myself. In the future, I will not even consider a book narrated by Xe Sands. She will join a short list of narrators I just can't listen to.
