Historia
With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

Apocalyptic but breezy
Revisado: 11-18-24
In the epilogue, Toll's account of the occupation of Japan was superlative, particularly when he enumerated the kindnesses bestowed upon grizzled veterans who found themselves unable to hate the Japanese despite their experiences warring against them. My own father served in the occupation of the home islands for five years and never spoke ill of them despite commanding Dog Company, 24th ID, on Leyte and elsewhere.

Pleasant
Revisado: 04-01-22
This book was interesting but I felt sad that the author wasted so many years waiting for Michael Jackson to pay attention to her. He maybe cared for her but was not in love with her. She waited a long time hoping that things would happen for them. I have to say that I enjoyed the books by Frank Casio and Michael’s bodyguards much more because they had much closer relationships with Michael and were with him day in and day out at times

Historia
Hounded by the tabloid media, driven from his self-made sanctuary at Neverland, Michael Jackson spent his final years moving from city to city, living with his three children in virtual seclusion - a futile attempt to escape a world that wouldn’t leave him alone. During that time, two men served as the singer’s personal security team: Bill Whitfield, a former cop and veteran of the security profession, and Javon Beard, a brash, untested rookie, both single fathers themselves. Stationed at his side nearly 24/7, their job was to see and hear everything that transpired.

I listened to the audio book and I can say that it was very interesting and heart warming. These guys were the real deal and displayed a true dedication to MJ. Humorous at times, sad at others, the story they told was compelling

Historia
The Frozen Chosen is an account of the breakout from the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea by the First Marine Division from November to December 1950, following the intervention of Red China in the Korean War. Fought during the worst blizzard in a century, it is considered by the US Marine Corps to be the Corps' finest hour. Fourteen Medals of Honor, a record for any American battle, and 85 Navy Crosses attest to the intensity of the battle.

Unique narration
Revisado: 04-19-20
There was a certain overall wryness to Mr. Dietz's delivery of his narration that I found both engrossing and edifying in those portions of the book dealing with the political and diplomatic events, but less so when he limned the actual battle sequences. These were rendered in an odd tremulous and sylph-like fashion.

Thrilling sequel to Leviathan Wakes

Gripping throughout, the epic scale of the story never eclipses the humanity of the characters. The narrator exquisitely captured the nuances of the principals, most especially Avasarala.
