They hide in plain sight. They survive on free school breakfasts and lunches, join school sports teams in order to shower, sleep on friends’ couches, in parks, or on the streets. Their official designation is “unaccompanied homeless youth”—they are not "runaways" breaking free from strict parenting; these are kids seeking safety. They have escaped abusive parents, have been abandoned, or have never had a home to begin with.

The storytelling
Revisado: 07-12-24
I loved the format in which the stories were told and how it all came together. The insights into the hard parts of helping regain the trust of children who had been let down and are homeless is valuable. This is because the reality she shares through those experiences aren’t what everyone expects, but it happens and knowing is half the battle so you aren’t offended when it comes up.

There’s more than meets the eye

Christine did an excellent job in not only narrating her own book with clarity and conciseness, but with emotion. Having been a Stan since initially seeing her debut on Selling Sunset I was elated to read her book. I had always had the sense of a lot of the topics she addresses about herself and the portrayal on the show, but to hear it from her own perspective was very endearing. Her attitude and resilience are attributes I see in myself, and she goes into explaining from her perspective on how to cultivate that deeper within yourself from your own personality type. The rose who grew from concrete is certainly embodied in Christine’s story of overcoming adversity and bullying at several points throughout her life into her adulthood. Except in her adulthood you can see the shift in how she handles it. I loved the read and hope for her to expand more into her family life more and discussing her relationship with her family now. The true Boss B!

Historia
Socrates was the first great philosopher of the West. Though he left no written works, there were many accounts of his life and philosophy. Socrates was an eccentric who went about Athens in bare feet and tattered clothes engaging people in philosophical conversations and exposing the contradictions in their claims of knowledge. Socrates himself never claimed definitive knowledge, but he made enemies among those he refuted and embarrassed with his persistent questioning.

I enjoyed the narration and the story of Socrates. We did not learn these things about Socrates in school and it helped give me a perspective about history.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Amazing
Revisado: 08-14-22
I want to first off by thanking Jeanette in allowing us into the most difficult parts of her life in an open and honest way. This book brings to light topics that many know exist in the industry, growing up, and abuse, but brings light to it with a familiar smiling face from our childhood. Long did I yearn for more of Jeanette in movies and tv, but now I look forward to seeing her lead the life she wants. I hope she follows through with the passion her mother didn’t allow her to explore, and finds a new life.
