Historia
Will Guidara was twenty-six when he took the helm of Eleven Madison Park, a struggling two-star brasserie that had never quite lived up to its majestic room. Eleven years later, EMP was named the best restaurant in the world. How did Guidara pull off this unprecedented transformation? Radical reinvention, a true partnership between the kitchen and the dining room—and memorable, over-the-top, bespoke hospitality.

Inside view of the unreasonable
Revisado: 10-04-23
This is a must read / listen to for both professional and personal development. It helps that I, unlike Will, backed my way into hospitality (took a job as a graveyard casino bar supervisor in grad school for psychology and got stuck in the industry by the velvet handcuffs of making too much to get out). So the vernacular is comforting and examples come across viscerally - pulling me through the story.
This book gave voice to and helped me articulate why I have so much success in one area and struggle in another. I have recommended it to everyone in the industry I’ve met and I’m buying it for discussion for every member of my team.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Much better than expected.

Started listening to this on a road trip with my partner (finding something both she: true crime, housewives shows and an occasional liane Moriarty - and I - psychology books or brain candy like Stephen king, Michael Connolly or Lee Child - would enjoy)…she has been obsessed with Megan Markle (watching Suits - and the ongoing debate of “who’s the hot one” Rachel - Princess Megan - or Donna - clearly the Prince Harry agrees with her - it’s Rachel). We are American and really don’t follow the royals. So, outside of being married to “Rachel Zane” and his mother being the late Princess Di…every piece of this story was brand new.
When you see that it’s “read by the Author” - for most of us that’s cringeworthy. For every Adam Grant and Malcom Gladwell, there’s a Stephen King or Dr Eric Thomas. Haz really is a pleasant surprise in his narration. He got caught reading a few times - but he mostly “told” the story. Harry was self-deprecating and went out of his way to focus on his shortcomings and struggles. He’s just a guy - like the rest of us - that has his every move under a microscope. I’m afraid of what the papers would’ve said when I was -18-24 and doing dumb 18-24 year old stuff. Much worse than Haz I’m sure.
Once again. A pleasant surprise and enjoyable listen / read.

White Fragility

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Important book - tough listen
Revisado: 12-15-22
This is an important book - but it’s very “in your face” and leaves one challenged without actionable steps to address and change in oneself. Much like a David Goggins book challenges your physical mentality and outlining how much more you could do - this does the same thing socially in terms of our racial interactions. But there is little in terms of actionable steps. This book basically boils down to a call to people of color to point it out and white people to be better at taking the feedback. Or white people call out other white people. Okay….but what can I do inside myself to identify these “hidden” cultural traits and keep others from having to call them out? The book is brilliant at calling out the weaknesses we have and how big the problem actually is - but does little more than say “be better”. The audience of this book are not white nationalists or nazis - it is people who truly want to “be better”.

Audie Award, Humor, 2016. In Furiously Happy, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

Funny but...
Revisado: 02-07-19
This will make you laugh out loud. But she stops to make excuses too much for her behavior...blaming mental illness for this or that. As someone who went to grad school for clinical psychology - she has missed the entire point of therapy. It isn’t to excuse your behavior because you have a harder time dealing with certain things...therapy gives you tools to deal with them.
Think about it this way. If you had a broken leg. You went to the doctor and she said, “your leg is broken.” Nobody uses the term “I suffer from a broken leg”. No, you use a doctor to set the break - and physical therapy and time to get better. Mental illness is the exact same way. The goal isn’t to find a med that takes the pain away (that’s like asking a the doctor that diagnosed the break to give you something so you don’t feel the broken leg anymore - it’s still broken - just because you don’t feel it doesn’t mean it’s not there)...because nothing is getting better. Fix your thoughts. Shift your paradigm. Don’t let the mental illness label impact you negatively - use the tools to lose the metaphorical cast...

Surprised I liked it
Revisado: 01-28-19
My wife said she loved this book - and when it was on sale with me having “free money” from an audible promotion - I thought - why not.
It hooked me in the first few minutes. The performance isn’t the best. - but I loved that they read their own book. It takes a minute to get used to them clearly reading - and they get better as the book goes along - but they’re not narrators - they shouldn’t be be as good as Scott Brick or the late great Frank Mueller. They design houses. Their show is unscripted- and it’s a good thing. They are a bit robotic (particularly hearing them on the show)...but again - it HAD to be their voices. I loved that they did it.
Honestly. This is a pretty great book...definitely worth the 5 hour investment.

Revisado: 06-01-12
Not terribly entertaining...but educational. If you're wanting to be swept away and escape..avoid this book. If you enjoy peeking behind the curtain to see the actual lives of mass murderers, and if there was a telling psychopathology or ANYTHING to use as a warning...then this is your book. I have a BA and MA in psychology so i found this educational and engaging...but it wasn't fun.

Historia
The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning, along with the houses in which they were hidden. Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires, and he enjoyed his job. He had been a fireman for 10 years, and never questioned the pleasure of the midnight runs, nor the joy of watching pages consumed by flames. He never questioned anything, until he met a 17-year-old girl who told him of a past when people were not afraid, and a professor who told him of a future in which people could think. Guy Montag suddenly realized what he had to do.

Contrived
Revisado: 06-01-12
It's good and probably a game changer when it was written - but let's keep this in perspective. It's mediocre compared to today's writers. It's literature which should be talked about in Sociology or possibly even Poli-Sci classrooms - but it's flat for entertainment.

Great Story - horrible Narrator
Revisado: 06-01-12
Pre-Colacci (the current narrator who has gone back and done a few of the early books for us)...I'm really glad this wasn't the first book I picked up of John's - because I probably wouldn't have kept coming back. Listen to this book later - and you'll enjoy the story...but the narrator is really bad...I mean it...really.
