Honest Memoir by a Classy Lady

Enjoyable listen. Ina does a decent read of her own memoir and I am glad she chose to do that because it added to its charm and brought back the show segments I have so enjoyed on Food Network. She has a warm and friendly voice. It was interesting to hear how she approached each different change in her life and career. The name “Barefoot Contessa” always intrigued me and so did her story so the memoir filled in the gaps and reminded me why I like watching her. I haven’t seen any of her later projects and she made feel like I have missed something I would have enjoyed.

I have read many of the authors books with pleasure and this one did not seem to be on the same level as the other series she has done. It was a little creepy. One thing I did not like at all was the swearing. It’s unnecessary and there are still people in the world (like me) who find it offensive.

I liked the book and the narration was good except for the parts of Ryan and Estrada. Their voices were grating and unfriendly. Maybe appropriate for Estrada but not Ryan the fiancé.

I thought the book was interesting, informative and full of useful information and insight. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the author's voice was not at all unpleasant. I have to wonder if the other reviewers downloaded the wrong format or something. If the title interests you - don't let the complaints about the author's voice put you off.

Elizabeth Peters has written a wonderful series of books centered around Amelia Peabody Emerson that are worth reading and listening to over and over. The narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, makes them come alive. Once having heard the skill she brings to the task, no other narrator will do. I only wish that all of Elizabeth Peters' books in this series were available by this narrator.
