Historia
The leviathan is the vast unity of the State. But how are unity, peace, and security to be attained? Hobbes’ answer is sovereignty, but the resurgence of interest today in Leviathan is due less to its answers than its methods: Hobbes sees politics as a science capable of the same axiomatic approach as geometry.

a true classic everyone should read and study
Revisado: 04-27-25
if without succinctness Thomas Hobbes sometimes clearly sometimes roughly frames historical questions at the heart of life and society that in 2025 when I write this we are still struggling to articulate an answer. this is a tremendously important document both representing thought and commentary and being a retrospective attempt to understand where we are and how we got here. in some ways however imperfect Thomas Hobbes does a better job of describing where the world is in 2025 then anyone, and that is very strange. it is hard to contemplate how his mind could have framed so many important issues given his historical locus, and one can only Wonder if such a sharp mind could have been alive in 2025 to comment what such a mind would say and say about strange document that we must study forever.

Historia
Before 1870, humanity lived in dire poverty, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great shift: invention sprinted forward, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we would have used such powers to build utopia. But it was not so. When 1870-2010 ended, the world instead saw global warming; economic depression, uncertainty, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo.

extremely incoherent
Revisado: 04-20-25
while the author is famous and while I would hope that there is a coherent book somewhere in this material, this is one of the most scattered incoherent history books I have ever read, maybe because it is trying to do and be too many things at the same time. it is trying to be hip is trying to be funny it is trying to be high layer simplified and it is trying to be an extensive detailed history. one example of the confusion is that a significant amount of the book is alternating back and forth between making excuses for communist regimes such as Stalin and Moa and endlessly passive aggressively saying that they were on to something and it was a good idea and they were smart and nudge nudge socialism is correct and then factually contradicting that with evidence back and forth back and forth back and forth back and forth. I strongly recommend that this book not be assigned to students who have not extensively read on the subjects that this book is very irresponsible in covering. the topics are great history is wonderful I wish this was a good book but it is a huge problem.

not terrible but while the first book had amazing voice production quality this second book is just sloppy. if the next book or books are good the lack of character development and coherence in this book maybe overlooked

Historia
This collection of William L. Shirer’s radio broadcasts tells the vivid story of WWII and brings the suspense of the times to life for today’s audience. As the first journalist hired by CBS to cover the war in Europe, Shirer compiled two and a half years’ worth of wartime broadcasts including Hitler’s invasion of Austria, the armistice between France and Nazi forces in June of 1940, daily roundups of news from Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London and Rome, documenting the conditions of these countries under invasion.

this is a wonderful companion to Berlin diary and while for a period after world war II for some reason the lessons of world war 2 were considered no longer important to study. but Shirer`s writing maybe among the most enduring for all future time thousands or millions of years in the future

the nightmare
Revisado: 02-12-25
this book was written 5 years ago when data science and even python were much less mature, so it is understandable that what is described is profoundly immature. but even bearing that in mind, the narrative is so chaotic and so obscuring of the state of disarray described that the overall proliferation of project destroying red flags is overwhelming. I am curious if morbidly about later books written by the same authors. there is potentially potential for the author's to write a readable book that is coherent, but this book is terrifying.

Historia
On the morning after the 2016 presidential election, Thomas Ricks awoke with a few questions on his mind: What kind of nation did we now have? Is it what was designed or intended by the nation's founders? Trying to get as close to the source as he could, Ricks decided to go back and read the philosophy and literature that shaped the founders' thinking, and the letters they wrote to each other debating these crucial works—among them the Iliad, Plutarch's Lives, and the works of Xenophon, Epicurus, Aristotle, Cato, and Cicero.

very important history
Revisado: 11-27-24
the focus and research of this book are highly recommended and a fabulous supplement to existing us and world history texts. this book is close to being a classic and perhaps groundbreaking however it suffers significantly from arbitrary insertions by the author. the book is still very highly recommended but please distinguish between the excellent research and main point and the extra rainiest arbitrary antagonism towards arbitrary historical figures. for example the assertion without any evidence provided that Thomas Jefferson wrote lascivious and seductive letters to Abigail Adams trying to get her in bed is unbelievably outrageous and without any foundation at all whatsoever. you should absolutely read Jefferson and the Adams's letters, they are philosophically fascinating and boring. whether the author actually hates Thomas Jefferson and actually doesn't care about native Americans or was trying to placate a specific political audience I will never know. please read this book and please ignore the garbage. arguably the writer did nothing wrong this is an epic first draft of a book, but the editor and publisher should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

Historia
As an international war correspondent and radio commentator, William L. Shirer didn't just research the fall of France. He was there. In just six weeks, he watched the Third Reich topple one of the world's oldest military powers - and institute a rule of terror and paranoia. Based on in-person conversation with the leaders, diplomats, generals, and ordinary citizens who both shaped the events of this time and lived through them on a daily basis, Shirer shapes a compelling account of historical events - without losing sight of the personal experience.

important and a kind of sequel to rise and fall, and an important study of a case study in administrative collapse. there seems to have been a presumption that the extremism of historical time periods was over forever by the end of the 1900s. but history repeats itself, and it is important to know history and to know what to not repeat.

classic story, problematic audio
Revisado: 08-07-24
the Potter books are classics and an asset to the world. the Stephen Fry audio is perhaps an acquired taste. for pure nostalgia I can understand that if someone grew up listening to it then they can like it for purely that reason. I have tried for decades to be open to liking the Stephen Fry audio as much as the superb Jim Dale productions. but there are numerous problems simply on the surface. Stephen Fry is openly indifferent to what he is doing. there is no attempt to have coherent or consistent voices for the characters at all. and voices for characters such as Mrs Weasley or frankly disrespectful. I have heard that Steven fry in real life is a tremendously warm and friendly person. but his production of Harry Potter is bitter cynical and makes everyone a villain. angry hostility is randomly injected all throughout the text with no connection to what is happening in the story. I find this very difficult to understand or tolerate.
