Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

Where's the magic?
Revisado: 09-24-24
There is little to no magic in this book. I'm 10 chapters in so far and I'm still waiting for the story to get going. For the first 10 chapters, everyone is pretty much just glaring at the main character. The only way we know who is a witch, vampire, or demon is because they flat out tell you, but you couldn't tell through the context of the story because nothing has actually happened. There is no lore for the creatures. I might give up on this if the story doesn't pick up soon. It's like a more boring version of Twilight. The narrator does a great job though.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Not what I was expecting but I loved it
Revisado: 11-06-22
I always thought Nicholas Sparks books were all sappy romance novels. I was apparently wrong. This was way more of a crime novel but still had bits of romance in it. The narrator was amazing. If you liked this, you should check out "Where the Blame Lies" by Mia Sheridan. They are very similar, as far as crime/romance goes.

Getting a life isn't always easy. And hanging on to it is even harder.... Jodi Taylor brings all her comic writing skills to this heartwarming tale of self-discovery. Known as The Nothing Girl because of her severe stutter and chronically low self-confidence, Jenny Dove is only just prevented from ending it all by the sudden appearance of Thomas, a mystical golden horse only she can see. That was certainly a book.
Revisado: 09-28-22
I got this book because the reviews told me to give it a chance. It was just okay. Thomas being a horse was a bit weird but, being an equestrian myself, I enjoyed it. Russell's character could have been more rounded. I loved Jenny, Mrs. Crisp, and the German girl. There was a bit of smut in the book that I wasn't expecting. Not only was I not expecting it, it was poorly written. I'm just saying, if a guy talked to me like that in the bedroom, I'd walk out.
It wasn't a bad book. I'm glad I read it. I don't think I'd read it again though. I think I'm just running out of stuff to listen to on here.

I LOVED this!!
Revisado: 09-18-22
This book was so good. I am a violin luthier and have my own harp that I'm going to fix up and learn to play. I would love to be a harp luthier as well. This book was so cute in the beginning. It got fairly dark, which I wasn't expecting. I am a domestic violence survivor and would have appreciated something about Clive's character in the description so that wasn't sprung on me, but I still enjoyed the book immensely. The way Ellie reacted towards Clive is very typical for victims of abuse. She is not weak or timid, she was abused. That may be hard for people to understand if they haven't been through it themselves (which I'm glad they haven't experienced it and I hope they never do).
I shared it in my harp groups on Facebook so other harpist would find it and give it a listen. The narrators were amazing. I'm definitely going to listen to more from Hazel Prior and the narrators.

Kept waiting for it go get better
Revisado: 07-28-22
This book is super slow. It also seems like it's written by someone who has a high school level of knowledge about WW2 and has never been to the circus. Kind of has the vibe that the author saw Greatest Showman and then wrote a book about the circus with only that as the research. The book has a frustrating ending.
The narrator was okay. He did a good job but I wish they would have hired a French guy to narrate it instead of having a British guy speaking in a French accent the whole time. He was a bit monotone but definitely not the worst narrator I've come across.
I don't regret buying this book. It's an interesting concept but the book was pretty one note.

Had potential but missed the mark
Revisado: 07-22-22
The narrator was American reading in a horrible British accent. The characters were half written and severely under developed. The concept of the story is neat, but feels like a watered down version of what it could have been. Only finished reading it because I paid for it and didn't want to waste money. Timeline was all over the place and had events that didn't fit the time period, aside from the obvious fantasy of magic.

Historia
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

I'm glad this book was free. The narrator was horrible. Literally sounded like a character from Family Guy or American Dad that was an over exaggerated mockery of British people. I've wanted to read this story for so long and finally decided to go for it. Guess I'll have to wait until I find a narrator that doesn't make my ears bleed.

I enjoyed listening to this well enough. the narrator did an excellent job. The story itself was okay but it doesn't really seem rememberable. When I'm scrolling through my library in the future, I don't know if I'll really remember the plot when I read the title. I don't regret buying it though. Good, but unremarkable.

Not my favorite from this author
Revisado: 04-23-22
Mia Sheridan is one of my favorite authors. I absolutely loved Where The Blame Lies and Where the Truth Lives. This book, however, was underwhelming. It took forever for the story to get going even though it was pretty obvious what was happening. I really didn't like the narrators. Overall, I liked the concept of the book but it felt a little unpolished. I don't regret purchasing this book but if you're trying to decide which one to buy, go with Where the Blame Lies and then Where the Truth Lives. Those two are infinitely better.
