Historia
Most people are familiar with PTSD. But many have not heard of complex PTSD and developmental trauma disorder. As adults, many of us experience symptoms of anxiety and depression. We feel chronically stressed. We have trouble trusting others, or we may even experience feelings of paranoia in our relationships with others. We struggle to define what it is that is bothering us, and we struggle to find ways effective ways to treat it.

Vital Subject Matter ...
Revisado: 08-15-23
... unfortunately, I can't comment on the totality of information included as i couldn't complete this Audible book. I'd originally struggled trying to read a printed copy as I kept falling asleep. In retrospect, I believe that speaks more to my trauma than to the book. Sadly, attempting to listen to it (even while busy with household chores) had the same effect. The reader's voice is pleasant, but she reminds me of the way I speak when asked to publically cold read a work of non-fiction. Her inflection often seems divorced from the subject matter. There are currently a number of YouTube creators who are either psychologists specializing in CPTSD or are creators who share their personal journeys as survivors with diagnoses of CPTSD. Consuming their content utilizes two of my senses, visual and auditory, and this seems to help my conscious mind remain engaged with this often difficult subject matter.

Historia
The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Valuable Information, but
Revisado: 08-02-23
This book was recommended by my therapist as an aid to examine CPTSD at a deeper level. In order to do that, I must be able to stay awake. The reader has a pleasant voice. Sadly, the intonation and cadence he chose for this reading lacks the energy needed for the book's topic. I've tried listening in different settings - while gaming or cooking or doing housework - but the physical activity doesn't help. I am soothed to sleep regardless. I want to better understand the topic and apply that understanding to my daily life, not fall asleep in 5 minutes.

Historia
As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events - his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible - that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance. But more than just a memoir, Torn provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members - or who struggle with their own sexuality.

Vital Words for the Ongoing Discussion
Revisado: 11-30-22
I always appreciate hearing a book read by it's author. in the case of Torn, it makes the subject matter more personal. We're hearing Justin's story as if he were standing in front of us; creating an amazing intimacy, gently drawing each listener in and making them a part of the discussion. If I could, I'd share this book with all the straight and LGBTQIA people in my life. Justin's treatment of the subject matter is straightforward and kind. Through his eyes and heart, we're offered a vision of a more loving dialog permeated by grace.

Historia
Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

and a superb recording that makes it come to life. I find the performance to be truly excellent. The story alone is marvelous and the deeper issues it addresses are if great import.

Historia
The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Performances Lacking
Revisado: 11-28-21
I'm very familiar with the case of Susan Powell and her boys. My desire to listen for more information overrode the lackluster performances. Who Susan and her boys were and the history of their case deserve a better presentation.

Historia
I'm a 64-year-old retired lawyer and former Assistant Attorney General with an unusual story to tell. Every word of it is true. It happened in a state park known as Devil's Den. For fear of losing my job and damaging my reputation in the legal community, I never spoke about the incident. If it hadn't happened to me, I'd be skeptical too. In 1977, I was an active duty NCO in the USAF. A friend and I planned a two-night camping trip to explore the wilderness. We drove deep into the forest until we came to a high plateau. There on the horizon sat a perfect triangle of three very bright stars....

The actual reading was well done
Revisado: 02-01-16
The book itself was of no real interest to me. This title was one my counselor had encouraged me to read, however, its theory stands in conflict with my faith beliefs. Prior to reading it, I had researched it online and discovered that the author was, or still is, embroiled in some level controversy regarding his authorship of Zero Limits.
