I like these narrators, they are entertaining and fit most of the characters. The sound editing was bad for the parts I listened to, as many pointed out.

There are parts that are funny and well written. I’m a fan of the author in general (even if I get a little tired of the alpha male and “ooh, let me spank this ass” stuff).

However, the whole “submit to me” line (both in the bdsm class, which should have been aborted as soon as Hudson said no, and in the changing room) just turned me off this story. Even if Sloane liked the changing room stuff, the (asymmetrical) power balance makes it icky. I won’t finish this book. There is too much sexual stuff going on without proper concent. Yes, they want each other, but I’m not sold on the concept. A pity.

This really plucked at my heartstrings. Beautifully written, with lovely characters and heartfelt emotions. I loved the use of flashbacks to gradually give us more knowledge of the characters and their relationships.

Going Postal Audiolibro Por Terry Pratchett arte de portada

This story never gets old

I will never tire of this story. Or most of the Discworld stories, to be honest. Terry Pratchett's great mix of satire, wit, mystery/suspense and touching relationships never grows old. His characters are spot on, and you can't help but smile about the typical human traits (and faults) that he incorporates in the different characters.

''Going Postal'' and the other stories categorized under ''The Industrial Revolution'' theme for the Discworld books are some of my absolute favourite Discworld stories, and I've listened to them over and over again. Stephen Briggs fits perfectly as narrator.

If you are new to the Discworld Universe, I highly recommend Googling the Discworld Reading Order map, otherwise you'll be completely lost. You could for example start with the Witches or the Watch books (those are my other favourite story lines). ''Going Postal'' is nr. 33 in the overall series and refers to several characters that have their debut and proper character building in other books.

Silly and touching

Be warned - this IS a romantic comedy. That means, little to no real conflicts or drama, and much silliness. However, sometimes that's just what you need to lighten your day.

Tanya Eby and Sarina Bowen do a good job of touching on insecurities that a lot of people have, be it about their size (the female protagonist isn't skinny, but generously curvy) or the rejection of former loved ones (both main characters are trying to get over a divorce or bad break up). However, this is not the real focus of the story - that's the bordering-on-ridiculous chemistry between the main characters. The authors have somehow managed to make it believable that the main characters can fall head over heels in lust (and love?) with each other after one raunchy one night stand, and a lot of the plot is about how they deal with this sudden attraction. The ridiculousness peaks when Tom (the male lead) talks with his dick, who has its own narrative voice. Some love that, I wasn't such a fan. The story was still very enjoyable, and the narrators did a good job.

A great adult fairytale

I absolutely loved this story. It's a fairy tale, but definitely not for children. Naomi Novik sets the scene by describing a village where they have to give up a girl every few years to the Dragon (a wizard) who owns their lands - not to be eaten in the literal sense, but the girls end up changed enough that they no longer fit in with the community they grew up in when they are done with their term of servitude. Thus, the people end up caring more about the girls who are born in a dragon year, because they know they could lose them.

As the story, and the protagonist Agnieszka, develops, a bigger picture unfolds with scarily creepy trees that can take over people's minds, and we see a complexity in the Dragon's character that both Agnieszka and the reader wouldn't expect at the start. The description of several of the relationships in this story is rather touching, making it an even more engaging read. It can feel a little drawn out at times, but the plot is complex enough that you need the full 17 hours and 44 minutes to feel happy with the story overall.

I feel Julia Emelin is a refreshing narrator to listen to - her Eastern European accent fits well with the setting of the story, and she does a good job making the story come alive. Some like her narration, some don't - so listen to the sample before you decide on listening to or reading this story. If you like fairytale inspired fantasy (without the silly glitter feel of happy-go-lucky stories), you shouldn't miss this one.

I loved Novik's take on the tale of Rumpelstiltskin. She's only inspired by it, so that there's no danger of feeling like you know where the story's going, at the same time you enjoy seeing how she's changed the plot to fit her own story. The community and world she describes is interesting, and the story engaging. Lisa Flanagan does a good job narrating, fitting well with the mood of the story. Absolutely recommended.

Rowling’s lovely turns of phrases combined with interesting characters and a compelling mystery made this a very enjoyable listen. Glenister fit the gritty Strike very nicely as well. Absolutely recommended!

Any additional comments?

This is a very interesting book, with good characters (the stereotypical witch-haters are unfortunately all too believable) and a nice twist to the historical past. I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to listening to the next book.

The readers are very good, but the switches between who's reading isn't always consistent. The story's told from different perspectives, so the reader changes when the point of view changes. Sometimes you get two readers having a dialogue, but it's annoying when you in the next chapter *don't* get the dialogue (maybe because it's a too small part of the chapter for there to be two readers present, I don't know) and you have to "get used to" a new voice for one of the characters. This, I think, is not a problem caused by the readers, but by the people deciding which chapters should be read by whom.

But this is not something that should put you off the book in itself, especially if you like historical fantasy in the first place.

Any additional comments?

Helen Simonson fills her novel with interesting, realistic characters that you can't help but care about, even the ones that makes you want to shake reason into their silly, selfish heads. Her description of a small English village and all its inhabitants is at times funny, at times frustrating and always believable (unfortunately).

I love the fact that the main characters aren't young or in their prime, it's very refreshing and makes you reflect about life not being over just because you've passed the age of seventy. Also, the love story (or rather, love stories) is rather heart-breaking at times.

I love this book. Go read it.

What does Bahni Turpin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Bahni Turpin sucks you into the story with her voice, gives the Downside characters a great accent and overall is a great story teller.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The love story in this book actually made me cry at one point. It has been building up from the first two books, the intensity ever increasing. I finished the second book yesterday (I think), and just had to start on this one right away - it was such a cliff hanger at the end and I had to know if she ended up happy - or as happy as Chess could ever be. Also, Chess' selfdestructive actions have made me want to bang her head in a wall quite a few times.

Any additional comments?

A great series. I love the concept of the ghosts and the Church, and I like the quotes from different Church books at the beginning of each chapter. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, you must do so. Don't miss out on this action-thriller world.
