Historia
In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone—a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.

Good; Not Great
Revisado: 01-18-25
The story is engaging if not a bit far fetched to make its points. Two examples. A blood oath at 15 that binds a 36 year old. No apparent basis for Hazel’s poor relationship with her mother in the beginning. But mostly I wish read the book instead of listening. The reader was a good reader but a poor actor. Emotions stated in the text did not come through at all in the voice to the point where the reader sounded almost angry when a character was described as being joyful.

Marvelous creations, including a short story set in the world of The Matrix and others set in the worlds of gothic fiction and children's fiction, can be found in this extraordinary collection, which showcases Gaiman's storytelling brilliance as well as his entertaining (and dark) sense of humor.

Very confusing
Revisado: 12-24-23
In this mixture of stories and poems, I discovered new aspects of one of my favorite storytellers. I didn’t like some of them. Perhaps reading rather than listening to them would have been better. As it was I could not always distinguish between them or even, sometimes, between individual stories. The description of each at the beginning would have been better distributed among the appropriate pieces throughout the book.

Historia
Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Terrible Reader for this book
Revisado: 09-15-21
A reader with a snooty English accent and an inability to pronounce Italian words or names correctly is completely wrong for this book. I could not even finish the first chapter. I will buy the paperback. If David Colacci doesn’t come back I will read the rest of the series in paperback and imagine his voice in my head.

Wonderful as always

Penny’s stories are always well crafted, complex, and completely engaging, but the reason I so look forward to each new book is the wonderful characters whose lives seem now, after 16 books, to be part of my own. Armand is a constant reminder of the kind of person I strive to be.
