With the holidays fast approaching, many of us are hunting for that special something for the special someones in our lives. It’s how we show we care about them. So why is it so hard to find the right gift? This week, we revisit a favorite 2022 conversation with researcher Jeff Galak. We'll discuss why the presents we give for holidays and birthdays often miss their mark, and how to become a better gift-giver. Looking for a holiday gift for a fellow Hidden Brain fan? Interesting analysis of gift giving and receiving
Revisado: 12-11-24
It was fascinating to hear about the different perspectives on gifts that the giver and receiver typically have. Good timing for the upcoming holidays!

Historia
Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for 40 years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.

Clever plot; international settings
Revisado: 03-17-24
I thought the story was clever and I liked the main character. International settings were interesting. Having been in the catacombs in Paris myself, I found those descriptions very realistic.

Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Meryl Streep reads a great story
Revisado: 01-20-24
I thought the story was a realistic portrayal of a strong young woman’s life in the time period and circumstances presented. And Meryl Streep’s narration was perfect for it.

Good story, but 72??
Revisado: 11-24-23
I found the story entertaining and also informative about the experience of moving to senior living facility. But the protagonist would have been better cast as 82 than 72.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Loved this story - and leaned something about GPO’s. It reminded me in some ways of Life After Life by Jill McCorckle.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Entertaining
Revisado: 05-18-23
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It was mostly predictable and had a long section about 2/3 of the way through about how women in science are sold short that I found unnecessary. I did like the cooking show, Harriet and 6-30. Figured out the Parker piece very early on.,
