Revolving confusion between 2&3

You don’t have a clue which character is speaking because of two extra narrators. Who’s talking to Adam at the very beginning of The Church? It can’t be Grace because her character is gruff and nasty and wicked.

Celia writes well but there are disconnects and holes, like stepping off a cliff (blindfolded) and never hitting bottom. You don’t get hurt but you’re left befuddled and it irks.
Why 3 books? because little lamb became a dolt in number 3. She was an intelligent, caring person and suddenly she’s creating situations that will shove her into bonus abuse and possible death? Irk, irk, irk.

I remember reading this book many years ago... the prologue alone- shook me up. Asked my mother to read just the prologue (she hides her emotions) but her eyes were shining when she finished and she didn't want to give it back. It was my first Hoag read and I was only through a few chapters. "Soon", I told her and watched anger build on her face. I thought I may have a fight about to ensue. It still puzzles me, but not Hoag's abilities.
This was my first Hoag audible (as well). I had to dig through boxes of paperbacks with the frustration of a reader of 3-4 books a week (so many years prior), just to get the title.
Back to the audible. I love flashbacks- the emotions, the recall of too many things to count, that struck an accord with my memories. It is, without doubt, my favorite of Tami's though that is not to say that I have not enjoyed nearly all of her books.
Tami does enjoy 'chaptering you out' (leave you hanging and move back to another 'left hanging' scene and so on.) It is a Hoag trait, so be prepared and do not let your frustration rule over the spin of her talent.
It was narrated well but, for me, the best narrations are very close to radio plays (the good old days, that have been explained to me thoroughly by my elderly friends). They are very nearly acted out and if really well done, you'd swear that you remembered sound affects, though you know there really weren't any.
Joyce Bean will get better and more polished as time moves along.
Overall: a very tense and fun trip. Well done, even with the long hours of listening, as it is complex with it's characters and twists. Well worth the package...

This book pulled at me hard. Eve and Morris' relationship has become close and trusting. It tore at me when Eve had to deliver such news to her friend, their relationship having grown with each book.
But Morris is part of the family now and the wagons have circled, even as his patient and methodical mind begins the arduous climb to acceptence.
I do hope in time that the depths of "Morris" and his character are plumbed much more and that his part in this series finds more of what he only briefly touched and began to believe in.

In the end, you can only worry that his brief encounter with the opening bars of love, will find him again. He seems to me to be very complex with a deep warmth inside him, not often found in others.
A warmth just waiting..

As with all books in this series, they just continue to impress. The Robb/Ericksen team is the best match I've come across thus far.
These character's voices are an intricate and complex unity for the enjoyment of us all.

Ericksen's gift of intertwining each character's voice and personality is what allows for the "fluidity" in the narration of Robb's stories, and it is more than impressive. I've heard nothing like it in any other audible to date. And I've listened to good and bad.

Question for all those who criticised "Peabody's" voice:
How many of you actually define a person's intelligence by their voice?? (Raise your hands if you think this way). Now.... go to the end of the line. While you're there.. check your character!

When they changed Peabody's voice in book 13 "Seduction in death", I was boggled. I actually stopped listening. I could barely tell them apart (Eve & Peabody).
Then I read of the complaints. Outrageous. I was relieved to hear Peabody's voice, slowly come back. She has pluck and balances out Eve's emotions when they overheat.. and is often the comic relief, which even Eve appreciates.

People actually believe that a person's voice defines who and what they are??
If so, there are plenty of mono toned narrations out there that should send them down "comfy lane", as to their "intelligence", or lack thereof. It's not just irritating to read such reviews but saddening. One's ability to articulate intellingence has little to do with vocal chords (except the obvious).

Never judge a book by it's cover.
Or in this case... Must I actually say it??

To Susan Ericksen: Don't change a thing. The emotional flow of the story and each character is defined by J.D. Robb and your ability to understand and comunicate the complexities to us, the listeners. At least to those of us who know the difference and can appreciate the talent.
You give Robb's (audible) stories, life. Thank you!

Would you try another book from Nora Roberts and/or Tanya Eby?

Nora, yes... Tanya, I don't have the words.

What could Nora Roberts have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Find new narrator.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tanya Eby?

Susan Ericksen

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Confusion and disappointment. Been reading Nora since' '91 and I'm unsure whether it's the emotionless narration or the writing. Narrator voiced two emotions and was so curt and abrupt... there was no flow of emotions, almost as if she couldn't wait to finish what she obviously has no gift for. I've always enjoyed Nora's novels and her alter, J.D. Robb series. I am a big fan of her style of writing. I think she's wonderful. It actually hurts too give this such a low review and to think it might be the writing. No way it's Nora.

Any additional comments?

I have never stopped listening to anything written by Nora.... I usually forget the time and find the sun getting ready to dawn. What happened? I actually took it off my kindle and iPod. Will try to finish but that woman narrating grates on my nerves like a dull knife. Have never experienced this emotion(s) before.
Nora and J.D. are wonderful.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Witness to be better than the print version?

Only purchashed the audio. The narator was wonderful. I'm sure the book is as well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witness?

That there is always "another" chance waiting out there, if you'll just reach out and take a step.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

She was great. I lived and worked near Bickford and actually visited once. You don't want to go there without at least $500.00 to spend. Wonderful art in so many mediums.Julia's voices were very apt, even the male voices. She surprised me, pleasantly..That layed back southern charm was peformed just right. Since I'm a left coaster but worked as a consultant in and around the south, she managed the Arkansas "kick back" (what we deemed each southern city's mentality as well as the depth of accent, where ever we found ourselves) with seemingly graceful ease.I hope she narates more of Nora's Novels. She's exceptional. There were only a couple of "read ahead" emotional responses that were not done as spoken, but overall.. would love to hear more of Julia's works.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

As I've listened to it several times... does that count as a yes?

Any additional comments?

I love reading but as I am losing my hearing, I'm trying to take advantage of audibles before it's too late. No one should discard audibles, thinking that "they're just not the same". In some respects it's true. Nora is such a fine writer, whether written or audible, she will still pull you into the story because she requires your imagination as well as her own. She never overwrites and you find yourself being "gripped, pulled in" and so much more. That is the magic of Nora Roberts. You become a part of it, like it or not. I absolutely love her futuristic series under the name of J.D. Robb. The "in death" series. Wow... I'm only up to 24 but have also listened to the latest in the series.. no confusion there. No matter where you choose to start you'll grasp the "layout" fairly quickly. The complexity of the storylines blow me away at times and I'm a programmer. The "in death" series is an ever increasing font of additional characters that grow continually and are challenged, each in their own special way. They are family and Nora/J.D. obviously knows "Family". Whether it's Nora or J.D. you should enjoy the read. So addictable and I am happy to say... there is no cure!!
