Historia
Imagine a job where you work four days a week and earn as much as the CEO. You also get full benefits, a gym membership, free lunch, and unlimited time off, no questions asked. Hard-won profits don’t just end up in the CEO’s pocket—they’re distributed equally among all employees. The company even buys you your very own car. It sounds too good to be true, but this is the reality at Tunnel Vision, the clothing company that Madeline Pendleton built from the ground up.

The Best Book on Money
Revisado: 02-23-24
I originally preordered this book because I found Madeline Pendleton online & wanted to support her endeavor. The promotion of the book got me excited about the capitalist survival skills (I was not disappointed), but her story was the cherry on top. I was moved to tears several times and found myself laughing out loud at others (glad I wasn’t reading in public). I will not only be recommending this book to others, I’m buying multiple copies to giveaway.

Historia
What happens when a woman seeking an abortion is turned away? To answer this question, Diana Greene Foster assembled a team of scientists—psychologists, epidemiologists, demographers, nurses, physicians, economists, sociologists, and public health researchers—to conduct a 10-year study. They followed a thousand women from across America, some of whom received abortions, some of whom were turned away. Now, for the first time, Dr. Foster presents the results of this landmark study in one extraordinary, groundbreaking book.

Enlightening
Revisado: 12-27-23
Whenever I converse with someone about abortion I ask if they’ve read this book, because I believe it is one the most comprehensive resources that is data-driven rather than the typical talking points I hear again and again. I recommend this book to everyone as a great way to be better informed about the whole matter.

Changing Our Mind has helped thousands of families and congregations carefully and compassionately rethink traditional religious teachings about full LGBTQ inclusion. With growing scientific evidence, our wider society has taken big steps, but too many religious families and communities have not kept up. Dr. David Gushee offers a powerful, inspiring message of hope and healing by helping Christians to return to Bible study, prayer, and reflection in a way that creates a vision for a more inclusive church.

This was the most comprehensive yet concise apologetic on this issue I’ve encountered. I especially loved that the author was simultaneously open about his strong convictions while being gracious toward his critics. He took seriously each of the arguments from traditionalists and even managed to expound on counterpoints beyond his own. I will be recommending this book as well as buying a few copies for some of my traditionalist friends.

Most people think of themselves as “good", but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad” - especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia, and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more, so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.

Great Summary of Philosophy
Revisado: 06-21-23
I feel like there are those who loved The Good Place and those who totally missed the point of the show. I assume the same will be said of this book. I loved the summary of ethics philosophy and the contemporary scenarios those ethics were applied to. Having studied philosophy, this book was a great refresher course and a helpful reminder of what guides my moral decisions. The narration is an added bonus as much of the humor is in the delivery. I will definitely be recommending this audiobook to those who are interested in growing to be better people.

Historia
"Who am I becoming?" That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So, he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: "Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life." It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was - and continues to be - the answer he needs. Within this audiobook, you’ll find a fascinating road map to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Historia
Whether listeners are devout believers or distant seekers, The Idolatry of God shows that we must lay down our certainties and honestly admit our doubts to identify with Jesus. Rollins purposely upsets fundamentalist certainty in order to open listeners up to a more loving, active manifestation of Christ’s love. In contrast to the usual understanding of the "Good News" as a message offering satisfaction and certainty, Rollins argues for a radical and shattering alternative. He explores how the Good News actually involves embracing the idea that we can’t be whole, that life is difficult, and that we are in the dark.

Paradigm Shifting
Revisado: 12-31-19
What does one do with their doubts concerning their faith? Some suppress them deep down, but those more daring seek to explore them. Many have tried to deconstruct their belief systems. Most swing to the opposite extreme, while others venture into heresy or abandon their faith entirely. Peter Rollins provides the framework for a third way, in which the conservative and liberal arguments are truly deconstructed and a new path is built. I highly recommend this book and others by the author. I love his Irish accent, but if you find it distracting or too difficult to understand then you really ought to by the text.

Historia
From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes it as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world.

Iliza is one of the best stand up comedians in the game. She is intelligent, quick witted, and self-aware. Her insights into the female mind are equally brilliant and entertaining to hear. Her delivery makes this all the more special since you get to hear her characters come out.

Historia
In this groundbreaking book, journalist and innovation expert Warren Berger shows that one of the most powerful forces for igniting change in business and in our daily lives is a simple, underappreciated tool - one that has been available to us since childhood. Questioning - deeply, imaginatively, "beautifully" - can help us identify and solve problems, come up with game-changing ideas, and pursue fresh opportunities. So why are we often reluctant to ask "Why?"

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Best Life Philosophy Book
Revisado: 12-31-18
The is the best non religious life philosophy book I’ve read, hands down. Mark’s insights make good sense. His advice is practical and achievable. And his stories, illustrations, and analogies are memorable and effective.
The narrator only adds to this fantastic work by reading with conviction at a perfect cadence and even adding flourishes of character voices when reading quotes.
One critique I would make only comes toward the end when he speaks of ”legacy” and “immortality projects.” There needs to be a clear distinction between these two concepts since people may conflate them. As I understand it, legacy is positive because it involves a person stepping outside of themselves in order to contribute to something larger than themselves whereas immortality projects are negative because they’re inherently selfish and a waste of effort.

Explorers Lewis and Clark had to adapt. While they had prepared to find a waterway to the Pacific Ocean, instead they found themselves in the Rocky Mountains. You too may feel that you are leading in a cultural context you were not expecting. You may even feel that your training holds you back more often than it carries you along. Drawing from his extensive experience as a pastor and consultant, Tod Bolsinger brings decades of expertise in guiding churches and organizations through uncharted territory.

Well worth several reads
Revisado: 11-24-18
As a pastor, I read a lot of books on leadership and the church. This is easily the best one I’ve read. Bolsinger presents fantastic mental models for fostering an adaptive style of leadership. The Lewis and Clark references were pointed, insightful and surprisingly relevant.
If you’re looking for a book that lays out a quick fix to your church leadership problem(s), this isn’t it. Bolsinger does better than claiming to have the solution by providing a different way to think about and approach our problem(s).
