Historia
Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago. Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—her husband, Michael, has been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an intruder, and the French police need her to come urgently to answer questions about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.

My first Lisa Jewell
Revisado: 12-16-24
The main characters are well drawn. I really liked Rachel. The flow of her emotions from independent young female to unexpected love to horror were perfectly drawn. I’ll be listening to more from Jewell.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

I couldn’t wait to get back to this book while listening. Love how the pieces came together. Intriguing and beautifully written. Audio performances are excellent.
Several moments where I was uncomfortable and wanted to yell at the characters.
I’m rarely this complimentary. This book and these characters will stay with me for days.

Historia
Everyone in Denmark knew that Yousef Ahmed, a refugee from Iraq, brutally murdered the right-wing politician Sanne Melgaard. So, when part-time blues musician, frustrated home renovator, and full-time private detective Gabriel Præst agrees to investigate the matter because his ex—the one who got away—asked him to, he knew it was a no-win case. But as Gabriel starts to ask questions, his face meets with the fists of Russian gangsters; the Danish prime minister asks him for a favor; and he starts to realize that something may be rotten in the state of Denmark.

I’m visiting friends in Copenhagen this summer and thought this would be fun as I love murder mysteries. I found it very lite and only finished to write down the restaurant names. The male protagonist spends as much time describing his couture as he does his sleuthing. My friends are very down to earth and I don’t suspect they spend a lot of time worrying about Gucci shoes and custom tailored suits.

Historia
Walt thinks he might find the answers he's looking for among the ruins of an old Native American boarding school—an institution designed to strip Native children of their heritage. He has been haunted by the image of the Fort Pratt Industrial Indian Training School ever since he first saw a faded postcard picturing a hundred boys in uniform, in front of a large, ominous building—a postcard that was given to him by Jimmy Lane, the father of Jeanie One Moon.

Historia
When tribal police officer Bernadette Manuelito arrives to speak at a program for at-risk teens, she discovers chaos. Everyone is concerned about a beloved instructor who went out into the wilds of the rugged lava wilderness bordering Ramah Navajo Reservation to find a missing girl. The instructor vanished somewhere in the volcanic landscape known as El Malpais. The instructor's disappearance mirrors a long-ago search that may be connected to a case in which the legendary Joe Leaphorn played a crucial role.

Sad follow up to Tony Hillerman
Revisado: 05-15-22
The performance is annoying. Many of the men sound like a bad John Wayne imitation.
Apparently, this author believes the FBI is the most rude incompetent agency in the world. I know the federal governance oversight of Indian lands is contentious but this portrayal is ridiculous. As the parent of an FBI analyst, I find this over the top distorted personification of an agent insulting. The character, FBI Agent Johnson is not believable and she lacks any nuance to be interesting.
Same with the character Mayflower.
I’ll keep reading to keep up with Bernie, Chee, & Leaphorn. I hope the author & editor work toward more believable characters.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Fantastic coming of age in a raciest world story.
Revisado: 10-24-18
This book spook to me as I continue to challenge and face my own white privilege.
I grew up in a rural hick town of less than 1500 people in East TN. In second grade, 1965 my elementary school was integrated and my teacher, Mrs. Tate, spanked the “colored girl” at least once a week, usually for not having lunch money. I knew it was wrong but had no words.
I’ve watched for decades as race relations shift and change but slow to progress. Under the current political climate, it feels we are sliding backwards. But this book gives hope and a lovely depiction of our shared humanity.
Beautifully read!

Miller does a wonderful job of describing the vagaries of eternal life as a God, and gives us the perspective of a powerful God becoming humble and appreciative of human life. Descriptively written and thought provoking on a variety of levels from family relationships, honor, kindness and what makes a great life.

Where does The Underground Railroad (Oprah's Book Club) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Love this story, it stays with you between readings. I have recommended this to numerous friends. The fear of being chased through the underground is palpable and you long nit just for the character's escape and survival, but for them to find a place of peace. It also leads to researching and learning about actual events that took place throughout US history.

This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love - his greatest love - the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna.

Lush Details
Revisado: 04-01-18
Would you listen to The Agony and the Ecstasy again? Why?
Yes, I would listen to this again especially if I am interested in life during the early Renaissance. Details of Michelangelo's life are richly described using the numerous letters, notebooks, and other correspondence that have survived.
What about Arthur Morey’s performance did you like?
This is a log performance yet Morey is easy to follow and maintains your interest.
Who was the most memorable character of The Agony and the Ecstasy and why?
Michelangelo's father, Ludovico di Leonardo Buonarroti is such a hard man and he takes and takes once Michelangelo is famous.
