Historia
In The World of J.R.R. Tolkien, you will join Dr. Dimitra Fimi to delve into Tolkien’s complex and multilayered mythology, examining all these ingredients and more. In these 10 lectures, you will explore and appreciate Middle-earth as medieval, mythological, and modern, a literary creation that was shaped by forces old and new. And you may be surprised to discover just how much of Tolkien’s legendarium was constructed posthumously, with his son Christopher compiling and publishing many of Tolkien’s later works after his death.

Surprisingly interesting for a lecture series
Revisado: 04-23-25
She’s a professor lecturing the reader, so manage expectations. That said, you will find something to love if you’re a Tolkien fan. I listened to it at 1.25X speed in about two days. That shows how interesting I thought it was!

Historia
A timely investigation of the causes of technological and scientific stagnation, and a radical blueprint for accelerating innovation. From the Moon landing to the dawning of the atomic age, the decades prior to the 1970s were characterized by the routine invention of transformative technologies at breakneck speed. By comparison, ours is an age of stagnation. Median wage growth has slowed, inequality and income concentration are on the rise, and scientific research has become increasingly expensive and incremental.

Inspiring and counter intuitive
Revisado: 01-22-25
I’d put this in the class of “Bold” by Peter Diamandis and “Zero to One” by Peter Thiel. It is a call to build something new, backed by (select) evidence of successful innovations from the last 100 years. I enjoyed it because I’m looking for this sort of compelling narrative.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Revisado: 12-09-24
I read this as a teenager then again my twenties. I came back to it with my kids 20 years later. It is even more profound and more enjoyable. Card weaves a great story with relatable characters, and includes so much wisdom. I’m going on to the next book!

Fascinating stories, solid insights
Revisado: 09-27-24
This was a well-written book. The author knows the investment space so he adds helpful context when appropriate. He did a good job explaining why these letters were selected and how they affected the modern corporate governance scheme.

Historia
When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people - who knew?). Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans! Again!

Historia
Hanson joins the Green Berets fresh out of college. Carrying a volume of Yeats's poems in his uniform pocket, he has no idea of what he's about to face in Vietnam - from the enemy, from his fellow soldiers, or within himself. In vivid, nightmarish, and finely etched prose, Kent Anderson takes us through Hanson's two tours of duty and a bitter, ill-fated return to civilian life in-between, capturing the day-to-day process of war like no writer before or since.

Incredible story of war
Revisado: 08-17-24
I read this before I deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Now I am rereading it almost 15 years later. It really came alive for me after those experiences.
Anderson teases out some incredible aspects of war. He makes it accessible in a way that few others have matched. I will come back to this in another decade and see how much richer it is!

Historia
A girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They possess a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her back home through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can only learn to listen.

I recommend this book. It is an important part of my growing appreciation for Christianity. Girard offers some powerful arguments for the scriptures’ value to humanity, plus a hopeful message for everyone who struggles with a sense of pessimism about the modern world.

Beautiful & Necessary
Revisado: 01-28-21
This book is for anyone who appreciate how much they can learn about living by listening to the wisdom of someone who has helped many through death.
Listening to the author read it gave the stories a deeper significance. It was obvious how much he cares about his work with people.
The practical advice is not always there, but the reader is encouraged to figure out what the implications are for his or her own life. I’m off to do this now!

Historia
The Courage to Be Disliked, already an enormous best seller in Asia with more than 3.5 million copies sold, demonstrates how to unlock the power within yourself to be the person you truly want to be. Using the theories of Alfred Adler, one of the three giants of 20th-century psychology, The Courage to Be Disliked follows an illuminating conversation between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher explains to his pupil how each of us is able to determine our own life, free from the shackles of past experiences, doubts, and the expectations of others.

Powerful ideas, read well
Revisado: 01-14-21
I listened to this book on a recommendation of a friend, who read the paperback. I was not disappointed. The conversation can feel a little awkward at a few moments, but overall the author/readers walk us through Adler’s ideas in a progressive, authentic way. I will listen to these again (maybe at 1.5X).
