Love Dick Francis, and have thoroughly enjoyed many Audible narrations of his works, particularly those done by Simon Prebble. Unfortunately Mr. Douglas read this story with all the emotion of one reading an in depth analysis of tax regulations. The story was still good enough for the listener to persevere, but barely.

It is unclear why this book is being read by a non native English speaker, when the characters are all British. It’s distracting, particularly when words are mispronounced, and the inflections and stresses on words are regularly misplaced. For example, at one point early on in chapter 3 it was funny to hear Hugo’s character describing himself as smelling so bad, “you can wind me from 500 yards…” Unfortunately the reader pronounced wind “wined” as in to wind up a clock, which of course is a different meaning from the author’s. There were MANY of these sorts of mistakes. I love this book, but it was frustrating to hear it read like this.

As a recent arrival in Hong Kong, I have been eager to learn about the history of this unique place. I have read countless dry histories, watched numerous YouTube videos, and ploughed through James Clavell’s saga. None on the above were even remotely close to being as enjoyable as these podcasts. I felt like I was in a home, sharing a bottle of wine and sitting back listening to these fascinating chats all about the history of Hong Kong, with dogs and kids and life going on in the background, and multiple asides that would come up organically in conversation. It so engaging and fun to listen to! I hope more will follow!

I love AAll the Heyer books, and Ulli Birve is so good a narrator that I look for other books read by her!

I love this book, but the narrator was so bad it was distracting. She has a school girl sing-songy delivery. Every sentence that was not actual dialogue was read the same way, with the same cadence, and much of the dialogue was too. Also, having lived in Cyprus myself, I know that she mispronounced many of the place names, which lack of research seems like pure laziness on the part of the people who made this.
