Michael Twitty is a masterful storyteller and teacher, bringing into the light a cultural phenomenon long shrouded in darkness… The foodways that emerge, past present and future, from individuals and communities who hold both Black/African and Jewish identity. This work is engaging, fascinating, emotional, and beautiful. And delicious.

The book is of course amazing, and Theodore Bikel’s reading is fantastic. The other two readers, however, mispronounced almost all of the Yiddish and Hebrew terms which is extremely unfortunate.

McKeever, while having a clear and pleasant voice, makes so many errors in pronunciation that it was impossible not to be distracted at times. There were some technical issues with the recording as well. The book itself is considered required reading among intellectual Jews with good reason. I'm glad that Audible made it possible for me, long overdue, to finally experience the imagined narratives of 15 levels of an ancient tel, over the course of almost 12,000 years of human cultural and theological development, interwoven with a contemporary drama among the archaeologists excavating. A moving and fascinating story.
