Historia
It's the summer of 1959, and something magical can be witnessed at the end of the pier in beach town Brighton, England. Jack Robbins, Ronnie Deane, and Evie White are performing in a seaside variety show, starring as Jack Robinson, the compere comedian, and The Great Pablo and Eve, a magic act. By the end of the summer, Evie's glinting engagement ring will be flung to the bottom of the ocean, and one of the trifecta will vanish forever.

Not For Me!
Revisado: 07-11-24
I see many positive reviews and while I'm glad that the book is liked by others. I found it hard to follow as the narration jumped all over the time line of 50 years and not in the least compelling. I never got much of a sense of the characters except for Evie and in truth I didn't like her nor what I did see in the other 2 characters. From here on out I will avoid this Author.

It's Time to Grow up
Revisado: 12-14-22
Mystery's are one of my favorite genres' and I am enjoying the lightness of The Oxford Tearoom Mysteries Series. Having visited Oxford 37 years ago I am also enjoying getting a glimpse into the various Colleges and some of the long standing traditions.
That said I am getting bogged down with Gemma's relationship struggles. it seems like it is time for Gemma and Devlin to grow up and learn to talk with one another, see the other's point of view and listen to what the other has to say so that they can actually understand what they each want going forward. After all Gemma and I assume Devlin too is almost 30 which is an age where you would hope they had more communication skills. I enjoyed the addition of Mary and the gardener in this book and look forward to encountering them again. All in all I will listen to the next book, Muffins and Morning Tea starting tomorrow and will likely work my way through the series.

Very Much Enjoyed this Book
Revisado: 07-25-22
Midnight Riot is a fun beginning to the Rivers of London series. I'm a big fan of stories about the supernatural & this book didn't disappoint. The build up from the first scene to the climax was well paced & kept me engaged. While a lot if characters were introduced they were individual enough to keep track of. My one complaint is that the at the end an important piece of the story was left out of the recording I have. When the glitch happened I went back several times believing that I'd missed something. But no I hadn't. One second Peter is in pre Roman Brittan the next he's home in present time London bleeding from a huge bite & worried about blood loss. I very much wish I knew what happened in those missing pieces of the story.

Love, Love, Love This Book.
Revisado: 06-11-22
The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep is one of the most original books I've read or listened to in years! The story line had some necessary predictability about it as how else were you going to have a crisis without an arch villian who wants to rewrite the world order? Beyond that the story is fresh, surprising & keeps you guessing. The bond & sibling revelry between Charlie & his brother was realistic & drove the brothers to make bad choices. Both characters in very human ways tried to keep things from each other as well as others they love in their lives. As often happens in life this almost created calamity & heartbreak. I highly recommend this book!

Reclusive literary legend M. M. "Mimi" Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style Ponzi scheme, she's flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi reluctantly complies - with a few stipulations: no Ivy Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids.

Just OK.
Revisado: 06-05-22
This was not my favorite book! It took a long time to like most of the characters & In fact I never came to like Mimi in the least. Mim's treatment of Alice was simply mean. It seems that the author wrote Mim in that way to show her insecurities . For me it just highlighted her in ability to be grateful for the huge amount of help she was receiving. On AudibleI own the other book that author had written. At this point I don't k iw if I wi listen to it or not.
I did feel that the reader did a good job with the various characters. It was always clear who was speaking.

Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Love This Shorg Story!
Revisado: 05-25-22
Thank you Jodi Picoult for a short story that demonstrated how unequal & unfair our system is & how clueless or heartless many people are about the cost to those, often both mother & child that are adversely effected by the bigotry around this topic.

Historia
The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

A Good Entertaining Book
Revisado: 12-12-21
Almost immediately after starting this book I went back to Audible to make sure that this book was not a new series by C.S. Harris the author of the Sabastian St. Cyr. books which I have enjoyed listening to for several years. I found that though Murder on Black Swan Lane is set in the same time and place it is a different series by Andrea Penrose. Penrose's hero, the Earl of Wrexford is, at least in this book more of a devil may care kind of character than the hero of C.S. Harris' series though the 2 men also each have an unusually talented Valet. As I listened some of the numerous threads, people and their relatives from the past and present, chemistry experiments, chemistry ingredients, and various books from various library's were a bit hard to follow and I made it through. As other reviewers have said I too expected the book to end once the mystery was solved but it continued for another hour. That last hour included what I believe was the transformation of Wrexford so turned out to be important if surprising. The story line was enjoyable and the characters, particularly A. J. Quill interesting I will listen to the rest of the series and am sure that I will enjoy it. I hope that the transformation of Wrexford continues.

My Favorite Barbara Holloway Mystery So Far
Revisado: 11-17-21
Though I rarely write reviews I listen to a lot of Audible Books most of which I enjoy. I started Kate Wilhelm's Barbara Holloway series a month or 2 ago and have been happily working my way through them ever since. I have to say that The Unbidden Truth is my favorite in this series so far. While each book has a very different story line this one was more engaging with some unusual plot twists. I also found the character of Carrie quite engaging. I marveled at the amazing attention to detail in the building of the defense case and was astonished that the character of Barbara Holloway didn't check in with her client as she put her defense together. I suppose that if she had the book would have been a good deal shorter as much of what Barbara eventually figured out could have been realized earlier if she had but keep in closer touch with her client. That said it was Barbara Holloway's lack of awareness of the shifts and changes in who her client knew herself to be that kept me so engaged and enjoying Carrie's self discovery. I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I did.

I Don't know Why I Just Didn't Care
Revisado: 10-10-21
I enjoyed books 1 & 2 & am glad @ how the series came out. That said I had to force myself to finish the book. Frankly I think I was bored it just wasn't that interesting. I enjoyed learning about Japan before the Europeans arrived in the first 2 books but some how none of book 3 grabbed my attention.

I understand Why and yet...
Revisado: 02-03-21
I understand why this Sleep Assistance recording was scripted the way it was and it did not work for me. It would have worked for me if the picture that was first drawn had simply been continued and embellished rather than new pictures leading me away being added. As Bram Barouh's soft voice spoke of the hammock and the soft noises around my breathing began to slow and I could feel myself gently moving toward sleep. Then he said something like, "if you are still bothered by thoughts or the noise of the party bothers you no worries" and then began leading me down the beach. I didn't want to go down the beach I wanted him to talk about soothing sound of the waves as they rhythmically came ashore and how a gentle breeze rocked me in hammock. Instead the walk down the beach kept me awake, brought me out the sleep I had been sinking into. The same was true of the climb into the boat and finding a place to lay down. Finally 10 or 15 minutes after the meditation had ended while focusing on the gentle rock of the boat and the quite lapping of the water against the boat I drifted into sleep at least 15 to 20 minutes after I would have without the scene shifts.
As I said above I understand why the shifts of scenes were included. The shifts and changes were designed for people who might find it difficult to let go of their thoughts who or might still feel agitated from their day. The walk down the beach and getting into the boat were most likely designed to lead those people away from their thoughts, their day or what ever else they were having difficulty letting go of. There have been night's when my thoughts or memories have left me quite agitated and unable to direct my thoughts elsewhere on those night likely this meditation would have helped. Last night was not one of those nights. I will listen to some of the other sleep aid recordings and hopefully find some that don't have the sifts of scene as this one did. And when I have a night of agitation I will try this one again.
