Historia
A haunting dream that will not relent pulls author Kent Nerburn back into the hidden world of Native America, where dreams have meaning, animals are teachers, and the "old ones" still have powers beyond our understanding. In this moving narrative, we travel through the lands of the Lakota and the Ojibwe, where we encounter a strange little girl with an unnerving connection to the past, a forgotten asylum that history has tried to hide, and complex, unforgettable characters.

Stories full of sorrow and hope
Revisado: 04-11-25
I chose this book not knowing anything about the story, the author or the reader. When I finished the story, I felt more like the book chose me. This book was filled with so much information about Native peoples’ beliefs, customs and cultural practices. I could identify with the author and his ignorance about these things. It was humbling listening to stories of the cruel and harmful treatment Native peoples suffered under White rule. It made me sick. But, it was also a joy listening to the humor infused throughout the book. Jumbo was my teacher and favorite character of all, and reminded me how I have misjudged people simply because of the way they look. Please read this book with the reverence and joy it deserves.

This book hooked me
Revisado: 11-17-23
The author very adeptly kept me listening for the next turn of events in this story. This story beautifully illustrated how one person’s bad decision or failure to “do the right thing” snowballed into the next person’s action or inaction. Cumulatively, the characters wove the web that led to their own ruin. In the end, the only real hero in the story was Liz.

A Fun Read
Revisado: 10-09-23
I hesitated to read The Weirdo because of the title. However, because it is narrated by my favorite reader, George Guidall, I took a chance. The chance paid off. I found the story of Sam and her disfigured but brave boyfriend Chip totally charming and engrossing. Something about the story reminded me of Harper Lee’s narrative style in To Kill a Mockingbird. I could relate to the clash between the bear-loving animal rights advocates and the down home red neck, gun toting inhabitants of the small backwoods town. Although there was violence and people died in this story, in the end justice prevailed. I loved this book and I recommend it as an informative and fun read.

Historia
As a Japanese-American fisherman stands trial for murder on an island in Puget Sound, snow blankets the countryside. The whiteness covers the courthouse, but it cannot conceal the memories at work inside: the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, an unrequited love, and the ghosts of racism that still haunt the islanders. First novels rarely attract as much attention as Snow Falling on Cedars. Remaining on best seller lists for months, it has cast a spell on listeners across the country.

What a great book!
Revisado: 09-26-23
I confess that I missed this book when it first came out. I listened to it primarily because it was narrated by George Guidell. He and Frank Muller are favorites of mine. But, I was astonished how quickly I became glued to this book. It was so well written and encompassed so many themes. Not only did it tell the story of a Japanese fisherman accused of murder in a small, close-knit island fishing community,
It also told of WWII, the Bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan, and the subsequent interment of Japanese-American citizens in what amounted to POW camps. The misery and heartbreak those people suffered, shielded away from the eyes of the wartime American public. All in all, the book was beautifully and sensitively written and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book never hooked me. The story line rambled and was not cohesive. Also, I didn’t like the narration. All in all, not a good pick for me. Guess I’m just spoiled by Agatha Christie and George Guidell!
