So good!
Revisado: 05-30-19
Funny, touching, deep, and honest. Pete Holmes lays it on the line about some very profound ideas, and makes them understandable and relatable, while giving us glimpses into his (very) personal life. I laughed out loud, I often had to pause the book just to think "WOW!!" Wow. This is good stuff.

Historia
Doubt-filled spiritual leader and reluctant Grammy-nominated Christian musician Michael Gungor finally let go of his belief in God as he tried to whittle together a god that he could love. Letting go of the stories that defined his identity and value in the world led Gungor and his family on a wild and painful journey through atheism, mysticism, betrayal, loss, medical issues, moving trucks, and thousands of online trolls.

A kind friend introduces some new ideas...
Revisado: 05-02-19
Michael Gungor is a founder and co-host of The Liturgist podcast, and listeners of that podcast are familiar with the story of the deconstruction of the religious faith he grew up with and his spiritual growth since then. This book gives a deeper look into both the events that happened in his life, and the Eastern philosophies that he has studied and is practicing. With warmth, patience and humor, he leads the reader/listener into explorations of ideas that were new to him, and may be new to the listener/reader. "This" isn't a memoir, but there are wonderful personal stories. It isn't a self-help book, but the ideas in it can certainly be useful in personal growth. It isn't a comprehensive explanation of Hindu and Buddhist thought, but it is an enticing introduction to those ways of understanding. You don't have to know anything at all about Michael Gungor, Gungor's music or The Liturgists to really enjoy this book. It is filled with joy and honest about sorrow and shame. If you are interested in learning about how Buddhist and Hindu ideas could be helpful in your own life, I recommend this book. The audiobook is narrated by the author, and his reading is wonderful. It's as if a dear friend is confiding his stories in a conversation. The audiobook also includes a bonus meditation track. Everyone loves a bonus track!

Historia
Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood", travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic", and whose mother disappeared. Beneath Phoebe's stories Salamanca's own story and that of her mother, who left one April morning for Idaho, promising to return before the tulips bloomed. Sal's mother has not, however, returned.

Great book. Wonderful narrator. But I wanted the unabridged reading. Fortunately, that is also available on Audible, so I was able to exchange.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Touching, funny, beautifully written
Revisado: 06-13-18
Wonderful book. Hearing it read in Frank McCourt's own voice takes the reader to the times and places he describes so vividly. Throughout all the hardships, McCourt shows how the kindness of others sustained and strengthened him.

Historia
Growing up, the three of us were friends. He was the nerd. I was the playboy. She was the beauty. Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits. He lied. I went off to college, and he got the girl. Amber never knew how I felt. They were together for years - before he broke her heart. Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch. When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Revisado: 06-13-18
One problem that I can't get past. Amber's friend is sophisticated enough to know about male escort services, but not worldly enough to know about Plan B? It's been around since 2006! This book came out in 2018. Come on, people!

Historia
In Accidental Saints, New York Times best-selling author Nadia Bolz-Weber invites readers into a surprising encounter with what she calls "a religious but not-so-spiritual life." Tattooed, angry and profane, this former standup comic turned pastor stubbornly, sometimes hilariously, resists the God she feels called to serve. But God keeps showing up in the least likely of people - a church-loving agnostic, a drag queen, a felonious Bishop and a gun-toting member of the NRA.

Good News - God loves screw-ups like me!
Revisado: 09-21-15
Where does Accidental Saints rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's not a classic for the ages, but it's a very entertaining and meaningful read.
What did you like best about this story?
Humor and honesty and God's love always shining through.
Did Nadia Bolz-Weber do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
What is this, a fifth grade book report?
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
They won't make a film of this book, so this is a moot point.
Any additional comments?
I love the message of the book - that we are ALL sinners, and saints. That human being can never "get it right". Even the best of us messes up royally all the time. But God's love and grace redeems us, and God can use us to do good and to be an instrument of grace. Nadia's honest and funny and irreverent and theologically sound and vulnerable, and it's a wonderful mix.

Using delightful and deceptively powerful stories from everyday experiences, beloved Buddhist teacher Sylvia Boorstein demystifies spirituality, charts the path to happiness through the Buddha's basic teachings, and presents the means to eliminate hindrances and see clearly to develop a realistic course toward wisdom and compassion. A wonderfully engaging guide, full of humor, memorable insights, and love. Boorstein, known by friends and colleagues as a "Jewish grandmother bodhisattva," is highly-skilled in making the universal wisdom of traditional Buddhist teachings available to all.

Great beginner's book on Buddhism
Revisado: 05-24-13
What made the experience of listening to It's Easier than You Think the most enjoyable?
It's easy to understand, clearly laid out with lots of examples to clarify the principals. The author does a very nice job reading her book. Her style is warm and conversational with gentle humor. I enjoyed every word, and I was able to apply some of the practices right away. I would like to read it again to help me to remember the teachings and to help me put them into practice.
Any additional comments?
The writing was wonderful and the performance was great. My only issue was with the recording quality. The sound was quite muffled. This forced me to have to pay close attention to be able to understand what was being said. I find it humorous and ironic that I am writing that, because the whole point of the book is that we would suffer less if we could learn to pay attention and really work to understand what is being said. So I am not complaining about that, but I think it will be helpful to other listeners if they know this is the case.
