Historia
This groundbreaking audiobook by Michel Foucault, the most influential philosopher since Sartre, compels us to reevaluate our assumptions about all the ensuing reforms in the penal institutions of the West. For as Foucault examines innovations that range from the abolition of torture to the institution of forced labor and the appearance of the modern penitentiary, he suggests that punishment has shifted its focus from the prisoner's body to his soul-and that our very concern with rehabilitation encourages and refines criminal activity.

Starts off really interestingly, but then...
Revisado: 05-20-17
Great history, insights, etc, but around the middle everything becomes very long winded, maybe even redundant... All my take-aways were from the first half, the second half was taxing and either above my head, or had little that I found really interesting.

Historia
This classic, definitive account of totalitarianism traces the emergence of modern racism as an "ideological weapon for imperialism", beginning with the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe in the 19th century and continuing through the New Imperialism period from 1884 to World War I.

Admitidly very long, but overall really interesting. The first 70-80% is slow, and contains long discussions of topics which later I couldn't remember why they were relevant, but the last 20-30% was packed with really insightful discussions on totalitarianism.

Historia
An examination of a world increasingly defined by disorder and a United States unable to shape the world in its image, from the president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold. The rules, policies, and institutions that have guided the world since World War II have largely run their course. Respect for sovereignty alone cannot uphold order in an age defined by global challenges from terrorism and the spread of nuclear weapons to climate change and cyberspace. Meanwhile, great power rivalry is returning.

This oral history takes the listener behind the curtain for all the show's highlights, from its origins as Comedy Central's underdog late-night program hosted by Craig Kilborn to Jon Stewart's long reign to Trevor Noah's succession, rising from a scrappy jester in the 24-hour political news cycle to become part of the beating heart of politics - a trusted source for not only comedy but also commentary, with a reputation for calling bullshit and an ability to effect real change in the world.

Pleasant nostalgia.. However it sucked that they used voice actors instead of the real people, kind of weird to listen to impressions of everyone.. Especially how stereotypical the impressions we're..

Narrator's breaths weren't edited out
Revisado: 09-26-16
Useful info, well written, but the breaths weren't edited out. Between almost every sentence, there's a distinct loud deep easily editable breath. It got really bad in chapter 3, and by chapter 5 I just couldn't listen anymore and had to return it. This is a huge lapse in audio quality.

Historia
As early as 1941, Allied victory in World War II seemed all but assured. How and why, then, did the Germans prolong the barbaric conflict for three and a half more years? In The German War, acclaimed historian Nicholas Stargardt draws on an extraordinary range of primary source materials - personal diaries, court records, and military correspondence - to answer this question. He offers an unprecedented portrait of wartime Germany, bringing the hopes and expectations of the German people to vivid life.

horrible..... well written, but horrible stories
Revisado: 09-11-16
The book achieves what it set out to do, and really explains the German perspective. It's clear, exhaustive, in depth, etc.. But as everything about what the Nazis did, contains a lot of descriptions of atrocities..

Historia
An unprecedented high-level master narrative of America's intelligence wars from the only person ever to helm both the CIA and NSA, at a time of heinous new threats and wrenching change. For General Michael Hayden, playing to the edge means playing so close to the line that you get chalk dust on your cleats. Otherwise, by playing back, you may protect yourself, but you will be less successful in protecting America.

Not bad but long
Revisado: 03-16-16
Long at times. Michael Hayden's definition of torture is different than mine, but he seems to discount things as torture if they can be rigourously defined. Informative, and good recommendations and proposed philosophies moving forward.
Also, weird thing, the author can't pronounce H, always used a Y. maybe it's an American thing? Like, instead of Human, he says Yuman. Doesn't affect the book, just a quirk..

Historia
Across the world governments proclaim they will never "negotiate with evil". And yet they always have done and always will. Why then do we ignore the lessons of this history of clandestine communication, often with devastating consequences? Jonathan Powell has spent nearly two decades mediating between governments and terrorist organisations. Here he argues that with attention to the lessons of the past, patience, and above all political leadership, these conflicts can be solved.

Enlightening but long winded
Revisado: 10-20-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
He gives many examples as evidence of his points, which is usually good but here it's distracting. All his examples are small micro stories done in a memoir'ish way. Too often the book reads as "... important point ... bunch of random sentences full of names of people I don't know ... short series of interesting events that I'm excited to learn about but instead we're going back to his long argument"
Any additional comments?
I suspect the book would have been better if rather than being organized as "point" then "examples", if it were instead written as case studies and lessons.

Historia
Superintelligence asks the questions: What happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.

Interesting for sure, but kind of boring
Revisado: 08-27-15
Any additional comments?
Every chapter is more or less the author proposing an idea/prediction, and then exhaustively defining and constraining the solution space for that idea. .e.g AI could be done via method X, which would enable A, B, C, D, but would exclude J, K, L, M, N, etc..
Except for that's done over an hour.
So, every detail is treated very well, and it's an interesting process, but near the end I just couldn't take it any more and had to skip parts. :)

Historia
From the best-selling, National Book Award-nominated author of Genius and Chaos, a bracing new work about the accelerating pace of change in today's world. Most of us suffer some degree of "hurry sickness". A malady that has launched us into the "epoch of the nanosecond", a need-everything-yesterday sphere dominated by cell phones, computers, faxes, and remote controls. Yet for all the hours, minutes, and even seconds being saved, we're still filling our days to the point that we have no time for such basic human activities as eating, sex, and relating to our families.

no thesis, unrelatably dated, no where close as good as his other works (Information, Chaos.) Just a long rant that things are now (in the nineties) faster than they used to be, with a lot of false narratives instead of evidence
