Amazing Story
Revisado: 06-03-24
I became a fan after the ACOTAR series, and SJM didn't disappoint with this series either. I binged all three CC books back to back! I loved the mixture of modern and magical in this series. I continue to love her strong female leads and SJM's story-telling is so well-paced and engrossing. I cried more than once for joy and sorrow.
I realize this series is for a younger audience, but I could have done without the graphic sex scenes. The scenes are a hallmark of SJM's work, so I became used to it in the ACOTAR series. I just wasn't prepared for the graphic language and I don't know if it was necessary because her work is awesome without it.
I also didn't love the social justice underpinnings of the story. It took away some of my suspended disbelief and I rolled my eyes several times. However, SJM is a fiction writer and it didn't stop me from devouring and loving all three books.
If you're looking to tuck into a meaty escapist series (and you don't mind graphic sex scenes) this may be for you!

A Refreshing Look at Dysfunction
Revisado: 11-17-23
This book was a recommendation from someone who called it "life-changing." While it didn't change my life, I can see how a person could feel that way about this novel. I was completely blown away by Beagan's insight into adult dysfunction and amazed that people like this exist, breaking everything they touch. I laughed many times, but I shouldn't have, which is a testament to surprising story -telling. I'm now a Jen Beagan fan.

Brilliant Look at Me Too Movement
Revisado: 10-31-23
First of all, I pre-ordered this book because I have strong opinions about the moral hazard of social media use and the harm it does. This book did not disappoint when it came to nuance and I couldn't stop listening.
I thoroughly enjoyed the accents and the vernacular. As an Afro-caribbean, it was refreshing to hear the story told by characters I recognize. This book would have worked just as well in any culture, but I felt at home among these characters.
If I'm honest, I felt some of the characters' conviction that what they were doing was morally correct to be simplistic and shallow in some places. The black and white thinking of young people (I'm almost 50) today is frustrating and at times alarming in their relentless pursuit of destruction as justice. But this is what made the book such a page turner and a fascinating read; Adegoke turns the spotlight on a generation that thinks they have it all figured out and are crippled with indecision when real life happens.
I absolutely loved this book and I think it could be an excellent addition to a contemporary literature class at any university.

Jennifer Ikeda Really Brought this Story to life!
Revisado: 02-05-23
Great story. Not sure about Witches being creatures, but I'll go with it. Jennifer Ikeda truly made the characters come to life with her skilled narration skills. I hope she's narrating the next in the series.

Really Enjoyable Series
Revisado: 12-08-21
Mr. Heller's raspy voice took much getting used to. Once I fought through it, I found myself submerged in Thomas Prescott-ville. Great stories that suspended my disbelief. I look forward to exploring other Nick Pirog series!

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

I never thought I would cry from an audiobook performance. I was worried such a big name like Phillipa Soo would overshadow the story, but my disbelief was suspended and my imagination stayed intact. Brava!

A Moving Portrait of Generational Trauma
Revisado: 07-12-21
My heart went out to all of the protagonists in this story -mother as well as daughters.
The story was so emotionally wrenching, their pain so palpable... And that ending! It brought tears to my eyes.
I'm not usually a fan of authors reading their own work, but the story warranted the almost monotone reading; it illustrated the colorless realities the characters faced, the choices they made.
I'll be looking for more work from this author. Such an interesting, unvarnished story.
