borring!

1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-15-04

I tried. I mean, I REALLY tried to listen to this one. But man this guy nearly put me into a coma! It isn't the length, it is just out of this world mind numbing. This was the first audio book (out of 7) that really put me to sleep.

It is like listening to a monotone history lecture. If you are a history buff that enjoyed the "talking to the blackboard" lectures is college, then this is right up your alley. I just couldn't connect though, although I really wanted to. I heard the author on NPR and was really interested in the topic. I just couldnt handle the guys boring voice.

an economist's world view

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-15-04

If you find discussions about economic factors that influence life enjoyable, then you will find this an especially exciting treat. If you are not an economist there is still plenty to enjoy and appriciate.

He tells great stories about our modern economy and what impact our daily choices have. He explains everything from why we have the number of children we have to why we marry or decide not to marry through the lens of economics.

Why do I hire a housekeeper?........ Economics.
Why do I have my son's birthday at Chuck E Cheeses?........ Economics
Why are african american women having fewer children?....... Economics, of course!

I did enjoy it, however, and in fact I quote this book often and play entertaining bits of it to classes. I am a college professor though.

Finally a thoughtful Christian book

I loved this book. I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Yancey. He is upfront with his doubts but remains a commited believer in Christ because, as he states, "whom else should he follow". The shares tragic stories that have shaken his faith and goes on to explain why he continues to believe and why his faith in God has increased.

He explains his journey from simplistic blind faith to a deeper more robust and complex trust in the Lord.

It is refreshing hearing from someone with doubts and questions just like me.

All my christian friends love it

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-21-04

All my christian friends sing praise for this book. They also joke about how they are all on the 15th day of the book and they have had it for 6 months. Hence, it is NOT a real page turner! It is well intentioned but quite shallow.
