Horrible Ending No Spoilers
Revisado: 04-03-25
The amount of poems at the end of this book made me want to pull my hair out. There is no reason for that many redundant poems to end a book just absolutely bizarre.

Its Ok
Revisado: 07-09-24
Not enough development into the characters to really care what happens to them especially the evil characters. Lots of deus ex machina.

I never read the Lightning Tree so this is novella is completely new to me. Pat's ability to say so much in few sentences always amazes me, I find myself rewinding his books constantly.

Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

This book has some pacing issues that the first book did not and some questionable decisions in terms of revealing characters motives. I loved the first book so I'm going to continue with the Cuckoo. I really hope Leo Carew can land the plane.

Just Not Good
Revisado: 11-02-22
The good outweighed the bad in book one so I wanted to see this duology through. Book two went off the rails in a hurry. I guess we start with Kaz Brekker sprinting on roof tops and through the streets? The more character development the more you realize that you still don't believe anyone is 17-19 years old in this book. The phrase "Then everything happened at once" served as lazy glue to describe anything combat/action scene too many times. So much deus ex machina its like the author weaved such a crazy web of problems that the only way out was more crazy improbable stuff.

The Good & The Bad
Revisado: 10-04-22
The Good:
- Lots of twists and good pacing.
- I enjoyed the multiple narrators, it really fleshed out the characters.
- The world building is really well done.
The Bad:
- These characters are supposed to be 16-18 years of age but sound and act like late 20's. I just pretended they were 26-28 but what in the hell was the writer thinking with that move?
- There are some cringy almost 90's action movie lines that really make you stop dead in your tracks.
- The guy who reads for Kaz is so freaking over the top. A 17 year old boy sounds like hes 65 and worked in a coal mine his whole life?
- You always have the feeling everybody is safe as many twists as this story has you never worry is _________ going to die?
