Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Bable Babbles a Bit Too Much
Revisado: 08-15-23
Much like the silver bars of the story, I think of this story with two different perspectives. On one hand, it's a character-driven fantasy that brings conversations of race and privilege to the fore. On the other, it's an "alternate reality" with a magic system that doesn't get explained until far too late.
Much like the protagonist, this book struggles with its identity and what it wants to be. It thinks itself Harry Potter, House of Cards, and Les Mis, while not quite replicating the magic of any of the above. Despite wanting to root for Mr. Swift, I found his radicalization to be confusing, causing his choices to come across as more misguided than sympathetic.
I cared enough to finish the story, but I wouldn't buy a hard copy.

Historia
As The Last Full Measure opens, Gettysburg is past and the war advances to its third brutal year. On the Union side, the gulf between the politicians in Washington and the generals in the field yawns ever wider. Never has the cumbersome Union Army so desperately needed a decisive, hard-nosed leader. It is at this critical moment that Lincoln places Ulysses S. Grant in command - and turns the tide of war.

A government special agent known only as the Signalman gets off a train on a stunningly hot morning in Winslow, Arizona. Later that day he meets a woman in a diner to exchange information about an event that happened a week earlier for which neither has an explanation but which haunts the Signalman. The future is coming, and they will help to usher it in.

Well written - too brief
Revisado: 02-24-22
In an odd review: this story is a lot of fun, but feels like it's only the first 3rd or half of a full book. Still worth it!

Historia
This panoramic fictional oral history begins with one small mystery: the body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, disappears from the town morgue. Soon, the US government - and eventually biomedical researchers, disgruntled lawmakers, and even an insurgent faction of the Catholic Church - must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world. With heightened strength and beauty and a steady diet of fresh blood, these changed people, or "Gloamings", rapidly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society.

Cool concept; poor execution
Revisado: 11-01-21
As a lover of World War Z (book), I was stoked about a similar concept, but with vampires.
They lost me roughly 15 min in when I realized their "historic account" is all written in the present tense. Might not mean much to others, but the lack of attention to the core concept broke my immersion.

Cool concept; too bad too finish
Revisado: 10-15-21
This book sets readers up with an intriguing, mysterious concept, and then fails to deliver. The voice acting is stellar for some sections (hence the 3 stars), but the actress who preforms as "Maria" (a child) was so brutal to listen to that I skipped entire sections of the book just to save my ears.
By the second story of sexually assaulting a child, I was out. One of the first titles on Audible that I deleted before finishing.

Historia
Few have been a member of Donald Trump’s inner orbit longer than Omarosa Manigault Newman. Their relationship has spanned 15 years - through four television shows, a presidential campaign, and a year by his side in the most chaotic, outrageous White House in history. But that relationship has come to a decisive and definitive end, and Omarosa is finally ready to share her side of the story in this explosive, jaw-dropping account.

Worth a listen, but not your trust
Revisado: 08-20-18
While I applaud the author's execution in writing this book, listeners should take what she says with a grain of salt. Starting this and listening to the news, I thought this book would be about making a case for Trump's mental degradation. While the author does argue said case, that arguement is almost an afterthought. This book reads like a case on Trump Apologetics.
This book is Omarosa's defense of her own reputation. She spends so much of it justifying Trump's actions and personality, that it makes one wonder if she really is "out of Trumpword". The cognitive dissonance between her stated goals in the text vs her active, tireless support in electing a man contrary to her hopes at every level is impossible to ignore.
In brief: this is the story of a person whose career skyrocketed when she was "fired" by Trump on The Apprentice, and I doubt that her getting fired from the same man's administration changes how she really feels about her mentor...
