Historia
Explore the revolutionary ideas of the Enlightenment with The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine, narrated by Gary Middleton. This seminal work challenges traditional religious beliefs and advocates for reason, logic, and free thought as the foundations of understanding. Paine’s incisive critique of organized religion and his bold defense of deism offer a timeless exploration of faith, skepticism, and intellectual inquiry.

The simple and obvious reasons for Paine’s opinion of organized religion
Revisado: 02-20-25
I’ve been curious about the reasons Paine was rejected and despised by so many ‘friends’, as well as ‘enemies’ during his lifetime, & at the time of his death. I knew that one of the main sources of people’s dislike of him was his well-publicized scorn and ridicule of the Christian religion. Though mainly of the founding fathers (especially Thomas Jefferson) agreed with Paine’s sentiments, they didn’t want to alienate themselves from voters. They kept their religious ideas to themselves, being politically astute., Paine, however, cared not what people thought of him, as long as he could speak the Truth. He thought that by showing people the contradictory myths & teachings in the Bible, he would be helping to free people from slavish & false submission to a religious hierarchy. I admire Paine’s desire to live the truth, even though it left him a lonely forgotten man at his death. This short segment on his ‘religious faith’ revealed his desire to live at peace with himself, rather than sacrificing his true beliefs to gain favor with others

Historia
Mrs. Grace Humiston was an amazing lawyer and a traveling detective during a time when no women were practicing those professions. She focused on solving cases no one else wanted and advocating for innocents. One of her greatest accomplishments was solving the cold case of a missing 18-year-old girl, Ruth Cruger. Her work changed how the country viewed the problem of missing girls, but it came with a price: she learned all too well what happens when one woman upstages the entire NYPD.

The undaunted Courage of a Woman who Sought Justice
Revisado: 05-05-24
I found this an inspiring story about a woman who refused to accept the feminine restrictions placed on women in the early 1900’s. Grace defied all convention in seeking a Law Degree and going to work for the rights of poor immigrants in New York. Though she had little support from the Government Legal Community, or the Police, she went about her courageous search for justice, even when reviled in the Press. The multiple cases she solved and the numbers of the poor that she helped are astounding. Without hesitation She walked the lonely road of seeking the facts even when putting her life in danger. I thought the book was well written, and hard to put down. The narrator did an excellent job in expressing the different characters. I greatly enjoyed this book.

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

The Character of Virginia Hall
Revisado: 04-23-24
This well written book revealed not only the brutality of the German Occupation of France, and the history of the brave citizens who risked their lives to resist. But it especially revealed the truly extraordinary character of a woman, Virginia Hall, of whom I had never even heard. Her intelligence, persistent determination to help the French people, her courage (in spite of having only one leg, the other having been damaged in an accident ), her self sacrifice, and even kindness in the midst of the worst circumstances, are astounding. This book also shows the extreme prejudice at that time against women in all areas of Government, Military, and Espionage Activities, and the tragic failure of recognition during Virginia Hall’s life, of her invaluable contribution to the Allies Victory over the Axis Powers. I greatly enjoyed this book and was inspired by Virginia Hall’s example.

Historia
After the 2016 election, Americans witnessed a frightening trend: the rise of a host of new extremist groups across the country. Emboldened by a new president, they flooded political rallies and built fervent online presences, expanding rapidly until they were a regular sight at everyday demonstrations. Amid the chaos, one group emerged as a leader among the others, with matching outfits, bizarre rituals, and a reputation for violence: the Proud Boys. We Are Proud Boys is the definitive narrative exploration of this notorious street gang and all the far-right movements they’re connected to.

Urgency of the Message
Revisado: 03-08-24
This book is well written and balanced. The reader does an excellent job. The message of this book expresses the magnitude of the threat posed by The proud Boys and similar Right Wing Extremist groups. It shows in example after example the fascist ideology these groups espouse and how their ideology and violence could become the norm in the U.S., leading us (with another Trump Presidentisl Victory) into a full blown totalitarian and Fascist State. This book is a ‘call to action’ for all Americans who love our Democracy and respect for all All its citizens. I highly recommend this book

The author is honest and open. He knows the history of the radical white supremacist movement, and clearly reveals the ideas, people, and motivations which brought this movement into mainstream discourse, resulting in a powerful dark force alien to American Democratic life and values

In this groundbreaking biography of the Japanese emperor Hirohito, Herbert P. Bix offers the first complete, unvarnished look at the enigmatic leader whose 63-year reign ushered Japan into the modern world. Never before has the full life of this controversial figure been revealed with such clarity and vividness. Bix describes what it was like to be trained from birth for a lone position at the apex of the nation's political hierarchy and as a revered symbol of divine status.

A scholarly researched and skillfully written Biography
Revisado: 09-28-23
Well researched and beautifully written, this book did a superb job of analyzing the complex character of Hirohito, and of the Japanese Nation’s Wartime self image. I learned a great deal about how the Emperor and his supporters used the Myth of the ‘Heavenly Chosen’ Monarchy to promoteJapanese Nationalism and racial superiority, and to carefully prepare them for aggression against their neighbors. I felt the author gave a balanced but frank assessment of Hirohito, and the negative consequences of his continued denial of HIS responsibility in promoting War and allowing the horrible crimes of Japanese soldiers against their enemies. This denial still haunts and damages the Japanese nation’s understanding of their true militaristic History

Professional killers with the souls of artists, would-be theater directors turned Kremlin puppet-masters, suicidal supermodels, Hell's Angels who hallucinate themselves as holy warriors, and oligarch revolutionaries: welcome to the glittering, surreal heart of 21st-century Russia. It is a world erupting with new money and new power, changing so fast it breaks all sense of reality, home to a form of dictatorship far subtler than 20th century strains, that is rapidly rising to challenge the West.

Superb
Revisado: 04-21-22
The Author is an excellent writer. Through his portrayal of the lives of a variety of ‘ordinary’ Russian citizens, he portrays the ‘atmosphere’ of what living in today’s Russia is really like. His story is sad and tragic to me, but the clever way in which he describes certain situations and characters made me laugh out loud. I loved Antony Ferguson’s narration. He’s superb!

Needs to be read by every American …
Revisado: 02-08-22
I enjoyed this Book immensely. The author does an excellent job of reviewing the early biography of the Dulles brothers and showing how their family and the era in which they lived influenced the people they became and the actions they took. It troubled me to learn of the deceitful and unscrupulous actions they took in the name of the United States. I can no longer point to the lies and deceitful actions that other ‘rogue’ nations take, knowing that my own Country has been guilty of the same immoral deeds, and has lied about it. The book flows well, with never a dull moment, and the reader was SUPERB for this type of subject. If one wants to better understand this Nation and where we are today, this excellent book is one tool for accomplishing this.

Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Revisado: 08-16-21
This is a gripping and tragic true story of one Family’s life of horror in North Korea. It is also the story of courage, determination, and the value of family life and human kindness. I am moved by the story of the immense suffering of the Author in his loss of almost everything precious to him, to question my own willingness to reach out to those in need. The Reader of this Story does a superb job of bringing out the thoughts and feelings of the Author’s unbelievable life of suffering.
