Historia
Finnmark, Norway, 1617. Twenty-year-old Maren Magnusdatter stands on the craggy coast, watching the sea break into a sudden and reckless storm. Forty fishermen, including her brother and father, are drowned and left broken on the rocks below. With the menfolk wiped out, the women of the tiny Arctic town of Vardø must fend for themselves. Three years later, a stranger arrives on their shore. Absalom Cornet comes from Scotland, where he burned witches in the northern isles. He brings with him his young Norwegian wife, Ursa.

Brilliant
Revisado: 01-03-25
Perfect narration. Easily in my top ten list. Atmospheric, and heart-wrenching take on the limited choices of women during the period in which the story is set. Beautifully written characters. Demonstrates the lengths men will go to keep powerful women in their place.

Historia
Since time immemorial, the Haddesley family has tended the cranberry bog. In exchange, the bog sustains them. The staunch seasons of their lives are governed by a strict covenant that is renewed each generation with the ritual sacrifice of their patriarch, and in return, the bog produces a “bog-wife.” Brought to life from vegetation, this woman is meant to carry on the family line. But when the bog fails—or refuses—to honor the bargain, the Haddesleys, a group of discordant siblings still grieving the mother who mysteriously disappeared years earlier, face an unknown future.

Gothic Appalachia
Revisado: 01-03-25
Story about family dysfunction and the scars our past can leave. The poor narration of this book is a shame because it’s distracting - it takes away from the story and characters. Almost gave up on listening several times.

Historia
After watching his asthmatic daughter suffer in the foul city air, Theodore Constantine decides to get back to the land. When he and his wife search New England for the perfect nineteenth-century home, they find no township more charming, no countryside more idyllic than the farming village of Cornwall Coombe. Here they begin a new life: simple, pure, close to nature - and ultimately more terrifying than Manhattan’s darkest alley.

Good story. Iffy narration.
Revisado: 10-13-23
The story was solid. Not horror if that is what one is expecting. Narration was pretty flat at points and the narrator pronounced “lilacs” as “li-locks” over and over which was maddening.

Historia
Six years after four family members died of arsenic poisoning, the three remaining Blackwoods—elder, agoraphobic sister Constance; wheelchair-bound Uncle Julian; and 18-year-old Mary Katherine, or, Merricat—live together in pleasant isolation. Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune.

A Creepy Masterpiece

Atmospheric, unhinged, and a perfect Halloween-time read/listen. Merricat is hilarious and terrifying. All of the best kinds of madness with perfect narration.

Incredible

Beautiful narration, breathtaking story. Brings new light to a classic and it’s author, but more so it’s a lovely and magical new story on its own.
