Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Stretched on way too long
Revisado: 07-06-24
I enjoyed the first 10 hours. The last two were waaaay too long and unbelievable. No spoilers but there’s no way the criminal had as much savvy as described. Not my favorite of the series.

Lack of story closures
Revisado: 04-16-24
The narrator was very good. There were way too many strings left untied. way too many storylines. The incredulity of so many scenarios was mind boggling. Could’ve easily been three separate books!

The British accent
Revisado: 01-30-24
The story was okay, but why in the name of all things American did the author approve a British accented narrator??? She mispronounces tons of words but the worst is WHY A BRITISH NARRATOR??? Makes zero sense. Smh

The narrator is so annoying it takes from the story
Revisado: 11-28-23
I found myself listening for the pause and wind up that the narrator does before almost every sentence because it was so prevalent throughout the entire 5 1/2 hours. Normally, I will not even spend a credit on a book that short, but I like this author. But if the rest of her books are narrated by this person, I think I’m done. Who told her that you should use that type of inflection before every sentence? It is the most annoying habit I think I’ve ever heard in a narrator.

A sheriff who can’t control her meddling family
Revisado: 01-24-23
I liked the first book because I felt like Kate was going to take charge and not be railroaded by her ex-husband, her family and her future employers. But she acts like she’s 14 years old and can’t say no or make a decision or do anything that would go against her family and the fact that her family interferes in her life so much is so annoying. If she is going to be like this in future books, I’m done.

Firstly, the voice actors were amazing
Revisado: 05-24-22
This was such a different listen for me. I really enjoyed the different characters and how they were portrayed. I love books where women aren’t written as weaklings as they’re portrayed as so often.
Having a different voice for each main character was so helpful keeping them separate. I highly recommend this book!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Making my 3 adult daughters read this
Revisado: 04-07-22
To say I liked this book is too tame. I absolutely loved it. Normally, I only read murder mysteries, but my oldest daughter heard about this and thought I would enjoy it as a break from death and darkness. She was so right! Not saying this doesn’t have darkness in it, but I found myself hoping things would go a certain way, then wishing I would’ve thought the way the author did! The darkness wasn’t devastating. IMO
I was worried I wouldn’t like the technical side, but it made me feel encouraged that I could understand and even relate. Elizabeth reminded me a little of Beth Harmon in The Queens Gambit.
Bonus was 6:30, the dog. You just have to read this to get see what I mean. It kept me engaged to the very end.

Historia
In the late 1800s, the city of Austin, Texas, was on the cusp of emerging from an isolated western outpost into a truly cosmopolitan metropolis. But beginning in December 1884, Austin was terrorized by someone equally as vicious and, in some ways, far more diabolical than London's infamous Jack the Ripper. For almost exactly one year, the Midnight Assassin crisscrossed the entire city, striking on moonlit nights, using axes, knives, and long steel rods to rip apart women from every race and class.

Excellent review of Texas history
Revisado: 02-08-22
Not only is this an interesting recounting of the murders of that time, but a long lost tale of the black citizens of Texas in Austin. I enjoyed learning (if enjoyed is appropriate wordage for the horrible treatment they received) about the culture during this dark time in Texas history. I recommend this book for both history and murder enthusiasts.

Arghhhhh the narrator
Revisado: 02-06-22
I listened to this at 1.2, then 1.4…the the last 2 hours at 1.6! This is the absolute worst narrator I’ve ever listened to. Hands down. If the rest of this series has her I’m out. Read all the reviews…especially the one that lists all her speaking errors. Ridiculous. How did they ever choose her???? I can’t even comment on the story.
