I enjoyed this addition to the Vera Stanhope series for its thoughtful exploration of the nature of families of all sorts: biological, happy, workplace, community...and the author's continuing development of this most interesting, complex, and imperfect protagonist.

The annual release of the. new volume in the Inspector Gamache series is a rite of passage from summer to fall. During this very difficult and painful corona virus pandemic, the chance to visit with the Gamache family as they continue to learn about themselves and each other was especially meaningful. Thank you, Louise Penny!

Fascinating plot

I enjoy the Kelly Porter series, and the plot in this volume makes for interesting listening, given its focus on pagan religions. I am getting a bit tired of "the teachet," though. Surely there are other criminals who could emerge?

Kim Moves Forward

Kim Stone finally moves into detecting and solving crimes unrelated to her painful past. While the plot still centers on family dysfunction on the extreme, this episode brings other members of the team into focus, as they all face their own and their families histories...and futures.

Healing for Kim

Kim Stone is not a likable character, although the author helps readers and listeners understand her and so offers the chance for us outside the story to choose to develop empathy for her. In this addition to the series, Kim has to bare her story to those she has power over, her Team. In other volumes, it's only those with power over her and who are male who have this intimate knowledge. I'm curious how the author will move the arc forward if the series continues. I will have trouble accepting the Kim if she continues to act as if her past still was a secret to her peers and subordinates.

Solid Installment

After the last book in the series, which was so violent, this episode lets followers catch their breath with a return to the familiar ground of the very first book. I am a bit tired of Ruth's and Nelson's always unresolved relationship in which he always has his cake and eats it, too, though.
