My Favorite Book from One of my Favorite Series

I read the entire “How to Date a Douchebag” series before trying my first audiobook version. I started with my favorite book from the series, “The Learning Hours.”

While both Muffy Newtown and Josh Goodman did good jobs with the narration overall, I was disappointed that Rhett’s character wasn’t given his signature Louisiana drawl. I wasn’t looking for incomprehensible-to-the-general-listener level of accent here, but enough to let us know it’s there. That Rhett’s roots weren’t represented in the audiobook took me out of the story that I love so much. Rhett is Cajun, has a French last name and speaks French fluently because of where he’s from, and this alone makes his character unique amongst the other “douchebags.” You wouldn’t know that by the audio alone. We’re told this is the case, though.

This is still my favorite book of the series.

Somewhat Annoying MC Redeemed by True Love

Without giving spoilers, there were certain points in this story where Lawn’s actions and reactions were infuriating. The overall story premise and great narration kept me listening, though, and I’m glad I did! By the end of the story, Lawn’s character is redeemed. I would definitely recommend this!

Love Lauren Layne

I read this entire series before taking a shot at the audio version, just for fun. I absolutely loved the books and all the characters, the friendships between the women and even the men (their friendships grow as they engage in relationships with their female counterparts) were fluid and realistic. The steamy scenes were enough to make me fear my Kindle might catch on fire!

I thought that the narrator, Samantha Cook, did a good job for the most part. At least, with the female characters and her emotional range. However, I was really taken out of the story whenever she voiced a male character. To me, they all kind of sounded like she was trying to voice old men, and they each sounded really similar, if not exactly the same.

I’ll keep on buying Lauren Layne’s amazing romance reads!

Good Introduction to the Series

This was my first taste of this author, CD Gorri. Her shifter world is imaginative and seems to be fleshed-out pretty well. As this is the first story in a series, questions are left unanswered and many details regarding what exactly the Wardens of Terra are fighting and why are left out. We learn the Wardens are here to protect the earth from evil, but what happened that caused the Wardens to finally be “activated” after centuries in hiding? I found it hard to believe that the first official mission given to a Warden was to basically check out an evil book in a random house that suddenly came alive. In a supernatural world, I’d expect that sort of thing to happen often, whether the Wardens are active or not. That being said, I understand that this is a story about “Fated Mates” and that “fate” will bring these mates together. I can distend my beliefs given this fact.

Overall, this story was a fun listen! The narrator, Ri Paige, did a good job bringing the characters to life and making the ride more enjoyable.

I look forward to learning more about this world in the next few books of this series!
