*SPOILERS*

this was a hard read. the main character is insufferable and unbelievably frustrating. the repetition, over-describing of things and retelling of the same stories made it incredibly difficult to get through.

the flashbacks add little to nothing to the plot line. her father in law dislikes her, but nothing ever comes of that fact, except that he distrusts her. that’s the entire plot of the book, no one trusts her, so reading about her father in law MULTIPLE times was redundant; it makes you want to just skip those chapters

her mind is frazzled, and written in a way that clearly makes you wonder if she’s mentally unwell, but then nothing is spoken about it again at the end, when she’s proven right. even though she was right, she herself still has these doubts and circling thoughts, and following only her thought process throughout the book leaves the reader wanting some sort of explanation and/or closure on her ridiculous thinking patterns

the fact that she has vitiligo LITERALLY added nothing to the story. doesn’t add any depth to her character or the plot

the last chapter felt rushed. all of that chatter about your in-law and how your husband spoke to you, for none of it to be relevant again and/or resolved … what was the point?

and the story from her past about the linoleum floor and her dorm room, doesn’t hold the intensity that i think the author wants it to. i couldn’t take it seriously as a reference point for our narrator

finally - not giving anyone any names prevented any attachment to these characters from a reader standpoint and left me borderline disinterested

The amount of Greek mythology references and stories casually intertwined into this story were amazing and exciting, but that’s where the enjoyment stopped for me.
The plot felt rushed, forced and confusing at times. The revelation towards the end of the story about where it was hidden, with no mention or buildup of a secret prior, seemed like a last attempt at something exciting for the story. The flashbacks were jarring and the return to present day was not always clear, which created a lot of confusion.

Cool story and premise, but execution was not what i had hoped

Gave this book a shot since reviews were back and forth. I couldn’t get past the premise of the book, especially since it was so immediate and without any real explanation as to how or why this mutation exists so casually in our world. It was too bizarre for me and i couldn’t help but laugh at some of the things said in Part 1.

I did not feel like this was a “deep love story” or anything of the sort, the story was average and the writing wasn’t impressive, so it was hard to get behind the message.

Part 2 seemed really unnecessary as it doesn’t tie in with anything, and I felt we’re left hanging with Lewis’ story at the end.

A great follow up to Swindler and the Swan. Such a great story. Amazing performances by the voice actors!
