I love Kate Carlisle’s Bibliophile mysteries series so when her latest Brooklyn Wainwright mystery hit the shelves I couldn’t wait to pick up my copy. Normally I purchase print versions of this series because I want to add them to my home library but this time I purchased the audio version due to an upcoming car trip. What better way to spend 8 hours in a car than listening to Brooklyn and Derek’s zany adventures? Unfortunately, I had to stop listening after chapter 1. I could not listen to the reader’s fake British accent any longer. Not only was the accent painfully fake but she would often drop the accent mid-sentence. The reader was not believable with other male voices either. I found I was so distracted by the reader I could not focus on the story. I will buy the print version in the future. Lesson learned-always listen to the sample before purchasing a book regardless of how much you love the series.

Another enjoyable book in the Holmes Bookshop mystery series. Gemma, along with her “Irregulars”, are embroiled in another murder with Jane’s mother as a prime suspect. Secrets are exposed. Loyalties are tested. “Presume nothing”.

Being a Sherlock Holmes and cozy mystery fan, I decided to give this series a try. The plot was interesting and made you think about “fairness” but the main character, Gemma Doyle, is just not likable. I understand the author’s attempt to give Gemma the same fabled powers of observation as Sherlock Holmes but her demeanor is off-putting and brusque. I did not find myself rooting for her to win. The other characters held my interest more than Gemma. I enjoyed the reader, Kelly Clare. Since the plot had a few fun twists and turns I might be willing to give the second book a chance.
