Fantastic
Revisado: 09-18-22
I primarily read epic fantasy and sci-Fi so I did not expect to be so invested in these characters. The author does a phenomenal job bringing these characters to life. Listening to the author’s note at the end, I kinda understood what exactly I loved about it. The setting and main character is generally based off the author’s mother’s youth and you can sort of feel the love and respect that went into creating it.
The narrator was also phenomenal. I’m not from the UK but the accent wasn’t so thick that I had difficulty following. It was easy to get lost in the story.
If you’re on the fence with this one, I recommend that you give it a go. It’s a beautiful book.

Filler book?
Revisado: 08-03-21
Not very happy with this one. Felt like a Filler book compared to the others. Seemed to focus more on the romance than anything. Sorry but I thought Haven and Stolus were a done deal from the previous book and it had already taken forever to make that happen. For this book to drag it out again over pointless musings.. Well it wasn't fun. Then there's the fact that Haven is starting to lose that gritty tough girl side to her that made her awesome in the first place. In this one she's a bit of a melodramatic panting damsel in a tight dress. And that's another thing. It was like the author got replaced with a dude who wanted to show us Haven through the male gaze. Everything took on a leery edge. Yeah we get it, she's a looker. We didn't need 5 male characters to leer at her to get that.
Also, not happy with the narrator. Is she in a rush or something? Did she realize this was a filler book and just couldn't wait to get to the next one?

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Don't usually read romance books unless they're epic fantasy romance but I gave this a shot and I definitely do not regret it. It was fantastic. The characters were believable, the romance aspects were sweet but not cringey and the MC was her own beautiful brand of powerful. Definitely recommend.

Give everyone a mustache to twirl
Revisado: 06-25-21
Everything is over-explained. To an absurd degree. Important conflicts are riddled with pointless exposition and villainous plan sharing. They'd be better written with mustaches so they'd have something to twirl dramatically. And the MCs never do anything. Giving these mustachey villains the opportunity to drone about their thoughts and feelings.
The female MC is even more inconsistent than in the first book. Her level of competence seems to be entirely dependent on artifical plot direction. She is also absurdly gullible and throws herself into ridiculous situations but comes out fine on the other end because despite being completely senseless, the plot gods have decided this was right all along. Also, in a fantasy series I expect to see some victory in each stage. At least something. But I cannot decide whether the world is a better or worse place due to the actions of the MCs. I'm leaning towards worse because they keep releasing terrible entities into the world. Finally, a grand plot twist in this book where a traitor is revealed was obvious from the first third of book one. The only person who didn't see this coming was the MC because she's absurdly naive. This slow burn traitor plot twist was not entertaining. It only made the MC more unlikeable for her blindness.
I will not be continuing with this series. I have had enough.

Almost perfect
Revisado: 06-21-21
I enjoyed this book for the most part. It was very well written, the world was thrilling and exciting with layers of detail that made it realistic and very easy to get lost in. The characters were absolutely loveable and easy to connect to. And best of all, it was funny. Witty. The humor gave it that extra layer of enjoyment.
What I didn't really like was the suspense element. This book is essentially an Egyptian detective novel with a mixed steampunk-mythology magic system. It succeeds on the latter, but not so much on the former. The villain was pretty obvious not so far into the story (the clue was something as obvious as the person's initials. That's very obvious) and because of that, you kinda lose a little respect in the detective for taking so long to come to an obvious conclusion. Perhaps if she suspected it at some point you'd understand, but for her to be completely blind to it until the absolutely last clue is given is pretty disappointing. She's supposed to be a great detective. It doesn't add up and that is annoying.

Pretty amazing
Revisado: 05-02-21
The pros: Fisher does a great job of making you fall in love with her characters. There is something incredibly genuine about them that really ropes you in. So much so that I'm eagerly anticipating the next book. Also, the narrator is phenomenal. Absolute pleasure to listen to.
The cons: these aren't deal breakers because the book, and the series so far, is pretty amazing. I feel like she could have progressed the plot further in this one. An entire city was under siege so it kinda fell a little flat when nothing came of that by the the of the book. Also, the foreshadowing and the tidbits of information dished out very deliberately by some characters is kind of frustrating. A character has answers but says that the MC isn't ready yet, even though the audience already has much of this information and has had it for a while. I don't think you should give the readers so much more information than the MC. It makes the reader feel like they're just waiting for the MC to catch up and it can get frustrating. It's probably better to keep your audience and your MC on the same page. Also, you want to end on a high note. The last 10% of the book was kind of at a 'winding down' pace. I was surprised the action was all over just at the 90% mark.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.
