Historia
London: 1968. Liz Houghton is languishing as an obituary writer at a London newspaper when a young girl’s disappearance captivates the city. If Liz can break the story, it’s her way into the newsroom. She already has a scoop: Her best friend Marisa is a police officer who is assigned to the case. Liz follows Marisa to Dorset, where they make another disturbing discovery. Over two decades earlier, three girls disappeared while evacuating from London. One was found murdered in the woods near a train line. The other two were never seen again.

Very twisty

I really appreciated that every time a puzzle was solved three more appeared it was realistically set up and taught me a lot of the British experience during WW II. (Please look up the grammatical definition of “farther” and “further.” I can’t believe no one caught that.)

Historia
It is 1942 and Eva Adami has boarded a train to Auschwitz. Barely able to breathe due to the press of bodies and exhausted from standing up for two days, she can think only of her longed-for reunion with her husband Michal, who was sent there six months earlier. But when Eva arrives at Auschwitz, there is no sign of Michal and the stark reality of the camp comes crashing down upon her. As she lies heartbroken and shivering on a thin mattress, her head shaved by rough hands, she hears a whisper. Her bunkmate, Sofie, is reaching out her hand....

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 03-12-25
My German friend asked me why don’t we “just get over” World War II; Germany has. I firmly believe something is wrong with German culture to participate in and then “get over” the War. This illustrates the kinds of depravity done in the 1930s and 40s—but most of the population participating in one way or another. And it told the effects of people housed in concentration camps. (Why did she KEEP mentioning the gods? They were overwhelmingly bullies.)

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Interesting if shallow life
Revisado: 03-08-25
Lots of politics, battles, and sex. I discovered in Chapter 7 that Achilles and his companion, Petrocles, are lovers. A large portion of the book covers the years of the war with Troy about Helen. The reasons for this war are pride and honor. Stupid reasons to kill tens of thousands of people.

Historia
Despite advances in health care, infectious microbes continue to be a formidable adversary to scientists and doctors. Vaccines and antibiotics, the mainstays of modern medicine, have not been able to conquer infectious microbes because of their amazing ability to adapt, evolve, and spread to new places. Terrorism aside, one of the greatest dangers from infectious disease we face today is from a massive outbreak of drug-resistant microbes.

What does a food detective do?
Some of this was very dry, even though I have a food science background. Other parts were fascinating. It’s amazing that the origins of these diseases are discovered at all. (The narrator mispronounced several
scientific words. I suggest they’re looked up before saying them.)

Yet whispers have come from across the sea - rumours of an army called the Steel Horde, led by a man who believes himself a god.

I was lost, but good
Revisado: 02-12-25
I kept feeling this is Book 2, as there were many important people & situations referenced, especially in the first couple of hours, that I needed to know but didn’t. I’m not familiar with feeling lost. I enjoyed the book when I knew what was happening. AUTHOR (& editor): Please look up the grammatically correct way to use “further” and “farther.” You used it incorrectly all through the book.

LOTS AND LOTS OF SEX
Revisado: 02-02-25
There was some sex in another of the series, but it’s been multiplied here. If that’s what you want, go for it. There is about half story line; the rest is sex.

Chika Jeune was born three days before the devastating earthquake that decimated Haiti in 2010. She spent her infancy in a landscape of extreme poverty, and when her mother died giving birth to a baby brother, Chika was brought to The Have Faith Haiti Orphanage that Albom operates in Port Au Prince. With no children of their own, the 40-plus children who live, play, and go to school at the orphanage have become family to Mitch and his wife, Janine. But at age five, Chika is suddenly diagnosed with something a doctor there says "no one in Haiti can help you with."

Do you need a good cry?
Revisado: 01-04-25
This is the story of a long-married childless couple who run an orphanage in Haiti. There, they meet and fall in love with a preschooler with, it turns out, a very rare brain tumor. They take her home to Detroit with them, where they discover she’s got maybe 4 months to live. They go to extreme lengths to find a cure, extending her life by several years. In the meantime, the family, friends & caregivers all fall in love with her. The reader will, too. The author reads his book and really tries not to break down. But I did—several times, even though I’m not a crier. I’m very glad I listened to this book and learned about this disease and followed this family during their quest. You will, too. (Socialized medicine would not have done these Herculean efforts to extend her life, but the author is wealthy-ish. She would have died quickly if left in Haiti.)

Historia
It was a time of legend, as the last shadows of the mighty Roman conqueror faded from the captured Isle of Britain. Meanwhile, across a vast sea, bloody war shattered a peace that had flourished for 2,000 years in the doomed kingdom of Atlantis. This is the remarkable adventure of Charis, the courageous princess from Atlantis who escapes the terrible devastation of her land, and of the fabled seer and druid prince Taliesin, singer at the dawn of the age. It is a story of an incomparable love that joins two astonishing worlds....

I was hesitant about the length of this novel, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying being in that world. It began with Atlantis and included its destruction. Two seemingly disparate story lines came together beautifully. Note: PLEASE look up the grammatically correct uses of ‘farther’ (distance) and ‘further’!

Historia
Adam Binder has lost what matters most to him. Having finally learned the true identity of the warlock preying on his family, what was supposed to be a final confrontation with the fiend instead became a trap that sent Adam’s beloved Vicente into the realm of the dead, where none living are meant to be. Bound by debt, oath, and love, Adam blazes his own trail into the underworld to get Vicente back, and to end the threat of the warlock once and for all. But the road to hell is paved with far more than good intentions.

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-21-24
I really liked the first two books, but not so much this one. His vision of the afterlife made no sense, was confusing & creepy. I kept losing the thread of the story, and that’s not something I do.
